I bought a frame for my 28 sedan last weekend and I'm looking for what I want to do with it.I want to make a traditional, fendered street rod. this frame has a bracket for a corvair box but I gather I can't have fenders with traditional steering. I have a manual steering box that came off of my 67 Camaro, when I went to power steering. Can it be used like a Vega box for a cross steer set up? I have several 60's cars but this is my first go at a street rod, I don't even know what I don't know yet.
The Saginaw 604 box is usually to big to fit between the rails of a model a, I believe the f1 box will work with fenders if done right Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
There are a lot of steering options with a banger engine but less with a V8. What are you going to run for an engine? Charlie Stephens
I guess I'll cop out and run a small block chevy. I have a Mercury flathead but I don't want to spend the money on it, I have too many projects going at once. I guess the key to using fenders is getting the steering box inside the frame rails, right? I still don't have a front axle either, I want a 4" drop but I don't see any way around buying one of those.
Vega box with cross steering, it's tried and true. Sure , there are a lot of sbc in model a's but don't look at it as copping out
This frame had already been used in a Model A coupe, so it has small block mounts and the cross member set up. It was also a high boy so it had a mount for the Corvair box, if I understand correctly, the corvair box can't be used with fenders because the drag link will be in the way. I'm just looking for something else that will work without having to buy a new Vega box, even though they are cheaper than the Corvair box. The front end appears to be where most of the money goes on a street rod. I appreciate you guys being patient with me, I have several other cars from the 60's that I have done the complete restorations with no outside help, so I consider myself pretty good on them; the street rod is just new to me.
Why cant you have fenders and traditional steering? Model A s had both when they were new.... No reason it won't work, if it will fit without fenders it will work with them . Traditional Cowl steering would be pretty ugly with fenders, If you think it's hard fitting a steering box into the LHS of the chassis with a V8 ..you should see how tight it gets with right hand drive and the starter motor on the right....but we get it done.
