Been following this thread since the beginning its one of the better ones on the board. Just my 2cents, but a GM 350 long block crate motor could be the answer. I put a 260 hp one in a '40 ford pickup and it was plenty of motor for the truck. I also have a 290hp one in my O/T '70 shortwide pickup. I believe the 260hp one is under $2000.00 and the 290hp one is just over $2000.00. They are both 3 yr. 50,000 mile warrenty. Just a thought. Again great project, going to be a great car.

Well.... I picked up this motor for $230 yesterday. It was in a car and I got to ride in it before the guy pulled it out. It smoked when you got on it.... so now what to do.... do I rebuild it...re-ring it.... or just drive it and save up for a crate motor. Ideas and opinions welcome. Thanks! Jon

    LS? What?
Check plugs, check compression, make decision from there.

I agree. If it checks out good run it so you have a drivable car. Once the car is "complete" and you're enjoying it, THEN build a new engine.

re-ring kit from Summit is like $85 (rings, bearings, gasket set)

you can get one of their house brand cam and lifter kits for anther $85

tear it down, clean it, hone it, slap it back together -you'll be surprised at the improvement for less than $200

Well.... I couldn't stand it so I pulled the head off the side that was smoking. One of the pistons looked washed, and the others looked the same. The head had a lot of carbon on that one cylinder. What does this mean?

The washed one, you could still see the hone marks, the others you couldn't. Does this mean the rings didn't seat, or has someone already tried to re-ring it?

Let me know what you think.
    Thanks,
    Jon

Just read all 14 pages. What a great story and imaginative build. Good luck with getting her back together. I miss my time in Arkansas, it was a great place to grow up.

Well.... build update... It looks like the smoke issue was that the guy didn't install the two oil rings on each side of the crazy lookin oil ring. So hopefully that stops the smoke!

But... I pulled off one of the main caps and it was shot, and the crank was real bad. I plastgsuged it, and it didn't even really squish.

So I decided to pull the crank out of my cracked block. It looked real good, but.... I knicked a couple of the journals trying to knock out the stuck pistons.... but I dropped it off at the machine shop and they said it should polish up fine.

If everything checks out, I'm going to order one of those Northern Auto Parts re-ring kits and get after it. Hopefully it will be a decent motor and get me through till I can get a new crate. Who knows it msy be awesome as is, we'll see.

Yeah they tend to price pretty fair and good customer service, though I've never dealt with them on the phone.

They've been a couple minutes away for most my life prior to our move south :)
