What's the best electric fuel pump for the edelbrock 1406 carb? I've read some threads that say edelbrock carbs are finicky on fuel pressure, but I don't want to have to buy a fuel regulator if I don't have to. What do you guys recommend?

My stock one works great, fuel lines covered in heat fabric.

  8. Carter electrics are a go to. Do you have a good pressure gauge?

I put one of those Carter pumps on my AD Chevy truck. Despite taking care to mount it with rubber insulators on the frame it was loud even over the noisy exhaust. A mechanical pump with a 25 buck pressure regulator was much better.

  10. That is funny, I have always seen the Holleys as louder!

This has always baffled me. A regulator is the proper fix, but folks never want to run one. A mechanical pump with a regulator is most likely the cheaper of the two as well.

Why do you not want to run a regulator? Is it just the looks?

i have used the holley red pump for 6 years with no problems....runs 5-6 lbs....funny about the noise though...i put a can of tune-up-in-a=can....seafoam.... in the gas tank and the pump went quiet until the tank of gas ran out....then it went to its same amount of noise again
also....my block is not set up to run any mechanical pump...no boss for the mount or anything....89 350 block

When you mount the pump run about 2' of braided AN line from the pump before you connect to a hard line this will knock down harmonic vibrations that cause the noise people complain about with electric pumps.

I am also running a Holley red pump with my Edelbrock 1406. No regulator. No problems. I only hear it with the key on and engine off. I don't hear it when the engine is running.

When my Stewart Warner 240A pump started to leak on my old silver '33 Tudor, I replaced it with a red Holley pump, thing made more noise that the solid lifter 375/396, headers, and Walker Continentals combined. Tried rubber mounts, etc, thing was just flat noisy; finally went to a Carter pump, much quieter. This was 40 years ago, interesting to hear that people still say they are noisy things.

If you use a Holley pump, isolate it with thick rubber between the pump and the mount. I mean half an inch thick. You will need to use bolts and nylock nuts to hold it on. Use flexible fuel line or the noise will come through the hard line.
Edelbrock carbs MIGHT run OK at over 5psi but will definitely run well at 4 to 4.5 psi. I've got this set up on my '29 Chevy with 2 500 cfm carbs and had no trouble for the 5 years it's been on the road.

Carter 4070 works fine with my Edelbrock carbs. I've used several 4070 pumps on projects, all mounted per instructions, some are much quieter than others, so there is some variation in noise pump to pump. Even the loudest ones don't bother me, only time they can be heard is with the engine off.

Another vote for the Holley red pump. Rubber mount like the instructions say and use a short rubber hose on the inlet and outlet and it will last a long time. Noise will vary depending on how the pump is mounted and where.
