I'm gathering parts for a Tremec TKO 600 swap and will be using a hydraulic throwout bearing. Problem is (as usual) too many choices and price ranges; I'm looking at the McLeod, Tilton and Ram. The McLeod and Tilton are priced about the same and the Ram is a hundred bucks cheaper. Anybody have any experience with any of them to aid my decision?
i just bought a mcleod and am using it behind a big chevy with lenco ******. havnt used it yet. just setting it up now. have had good tech support. they even swapped out ( for free) the piston for a longer one to get my clearances correct. i guess i went with them because i got their clutch and flywheel also.
I am doing the same thing on a B'ville Lakester and had to go down to Mcleod and do some swaping, but still had to make a 7/8 spacer to go between the can and T/O bearing housing to get it to work.
Inventory clutch i465 black gas throw-out bearing for stock-style 3-speed and 4-speed Chevrolet grip only
I have a Tilton in my 57 Chevy with a Keislers Rally Sport trans. That is a Ford 5 speed converted to fit a Chevrolet. I chose that because of the hump clearance. The whole combination has now just over 5000 miles on it with 3000 of them being on Hot Rod Power Tour. No issues no problems. I did cut a line when installing it and Tilton made the repair for super fast. By the way I am running a 3:42 rear gear and with the overdrive and a 330 hp small block I was able to get between 19 and 21 mpg while on Power tour. Not as good in town here but still not bad. Good luck and PM me if I can help. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I don't have a modern transmission in my car, but if I did, I would get one of these instead of the hyd throwout. http://www.5speedtransmissions.com/hydclutchpkg.html
I have used the McLeod hydraulic throwout bearings in the past with excellent results and just ordered another one for my current project the most important thing is to get the measurements right. their tech support is great
That's almost exactly the setup I have...Chevy built the slave tab/mount into their truck bell-housings in the mid-eighties, which is what I'm using. The only problem is that position puts the slave very close to my headers. I might re-arrange to a pull type slave to move it away from my headers and keep it cool.
Do you have your bellhousing yet? On my TKO 600 I used a Tilton Sonic bellhousing and the Tilton hydraulic TO bearing that bolts to the back of the bellhousing. Still have to shorten the trans TO bearing holder some to get clearance.
Have you looked at any of the oem setups? Jeep, as one example, has been using an hyd t/o bearing for several years. Perhaps it, or one of the other oem units, could be modified? .
