pics of bad chops, when good chops go bad

  1. Ok, I have seen so many "show me" threads started lately. Show me old trucks, 'cuz I like 'em... Show me mopars, 'cuz I have one too...

I'd like to see some projects that when wrong. Show me some cars that were started with good intentions, but only went so far as to get put behind the barn in shame. This oughta be good. ;)

  4. Hey!! Who told you about my plan?? No pics 'cuz I haven't screwed it up yet but if I do I'll posta what "NOT TO DO" thread and a tech piece on "How I Made My First Carson Top"...

The problem is that if things went that wrong, the last thing you'd want is photo documentation

Dumb ass question , and apologies for the slight hijack , but is the origin of the Carson top down to failed roofchops ? I always assumed some guy called Carson started them off ?

Feel free to take the piss out of the ignorant fucker , but any answers ?

Reminds me of that episode of Overhaulin where the guy's '56 Chevy 2dr sedan had it's roof just resting on the rest of the car. Not sure what the story was there, but it can't be good.

Then they went out and cut up a good car to restore the roof on that one. I think it's the first car that Foose DIDN'T just hack the roof off of... lol.

    Hey Ratty,

There was a Carson shop in So-Cal in the late '20's. The produced padded non-folding tops through to the mid '60's though their prime was the '40's and '50's. They were a fashion item in themselves and not plodded on top of bad roof chops, though I'm sure it would've been tempting!

There was another company making power tops for customs but I can't think of their name.

  17. HAHA!! I was waiting for that one GreaseMonk!

It is actually the inspiration for this thread. I wasn't sure how mine was going to turn out, and I'm sure someone else MUST have been down this road before.

    You gotta start somewhere!

Boredom and a really cool shop teacher make for some fun times

I wish I had a pic of one of our high school shop cars. We took a bright orange caprice wagon and chopped about 8 inches out of it... with a torch.

Then used a BFH to line up the pillars, and put it all back together again... with the torch :D

That entire car ended up getting cut into pieces and thrown into a dumpster.

  22. Locally they offer a street rod customizing course at the tech college.

An instructor led project was to chop a '47 Chev coupe. Long story made short, it will now be a convertible with no folding top in sight.

Wish I had a $5 bill for every aborted chop job. I could contract Chip to build me a car.

It's amazing what kind of damage a few guys, a few cases of beer, a few flawed ideas and a few hacksaws can do to a perfectly good car.

The next morning the idea guys look at what they completed the night before  and say, "oh shit, what have we done?".

    Hey Brandy,
Ta close the door gaps up on your five eight try liftin the front and rear
of the vehicle , on floor jacks, at the same time. When the door gaps get
ball park, cut square steel tube fore and aft and tack weld it into place,
after removin the interior, of course! Than it will be time ta figger what
yer gonna do ta keep it that way. Real drop tops of that era had beefy
ass x-member frames and beefed-up rockers.
    Nice lookin phaeton.

I've had the "pleasure" of being asked to repair a few really bad chops. I don't know if I have pics of the 55 Chevy wagon, I might, but the guy cut the roof, welded on one side of the windshield posts, then went to the other, and bent, twisted, and pushed it into submission. As you would guess, the roof was uneven, to say the least. I had to cut it apart, and take careful measurements, make templates, and portapower the top back into square. I even cut, and installed a windshield into it when finished. What a job!!!!
The second, I got called in on a car that I helped do the finish bodywork and paint. The owner sold it, and the new owner brought it to a relatively well known customizer here in NJ. The guy cut the roof, which had a severe wraparound windshield, and pulled in the lower posts to meet the now "too short" roof. How the hell are you going to fit a windshield into that? Do you heat and bend the windsheild to fit the "too narrow" A pillars? I told him the only way to fix it was to re-cut the roof and start from scratch. Since he had already painted it, that was not an option for him. The next I hear, they were going to try to cut a stock windsheild in half, down the center, take out the required amount, and either Butte the glass, or put in a divider, like a 40's car??????????? Last I saw the car, it had Plexi, or Lexan....
