They may be for the oil gallery plugs at the back of the block. The driver side has a pair. 3/8" and 1/4" pipe at the very back, and a 1/4" plug that goes through a 3/8" pipe plug hole into a 1/4" hole about 3" toward the front of the block after being inserted through the 3/8" plug hole at the back. The 1/4" plug on the p***enger side has direct oil pressure on it since it is at the back of the oil gallery as does the other 1/4" plug. The larger 3/8" plug is only under the same pressure as you'd find under the valve covers. Often times an oil leak at the back of the block will be diagnosed as the rear main seal when it is actually the 1/4" plug on the p***enger side. The rear main seal is like the front crank seal in that it does have it's own slinger right on the crank and a s****er on the crank which draws oil forward away from the seal as the crank rotates. That s****er in a set of scored lines in the crank that are set at about a 45 degree angle. If you set the crank in the bearings and spin in in the proper direction, you'll see those s****ers moving forward in order to move any oil forward. Those scores will be sitting right on the seal. When installing those plugs be sure to use a good sealant or you will have what looks like a rear main seal leak. If those plugs are very big, say about one inch across, they may be for the top of the heads.

If the pipe plugs are really big, they maybe the rear core plugs in the rear of block under the bell housing. These are almost never removed, water jacket behind them.
