I'm looking at buying some real soon.
Would like to hear how good the repops are. Good or bad. I'd really like a set of originals but as you all know....hard to find and very big $$$$.

    Thanks in advance guys! :D

The originals aren't very bright, but with the filter in them they give an evel glow.

    Is that salt or snow?

  6. Here's mine. Same lights, different cars. I live in the country, and couldn't see very well with them, so I took them off. Dean

Last I heard the repop's, actually better called latest run of E&Js because they are exquisite quality, run DOT legal Snowmobile headlights.
I've seen them, touched them, you want to fondle them like Pammy's.... :p

I bought a set of "copies" that went down recently on Ebay. They are very rough castings. Attaching the front rings will be a challenge. From 50 feet they should pass muster tho...

I'll never be able to afford a pair of E&Js. They go for more than I paid for any of my project cars. But a man could dream....can't he.

WOW..... bid is up to $910.00! Outta my price range.
Originals just look soooo badass with the purple tinted glass.

Dr J: I checked out the lights that framedragger is reproducing. VERY VERY nice. I'll probably go that route soon if I don't come across a good deal on originals.

Thanks for the pics everyone...your cars all look GREAT!!!! :D

a quick way to tell if they are OG is if the lenses are purple. cause the originals are made from crystals and in the sun they turn purple.

There are a lot of other really cool period lights too like the Whalens and the ultra-bitchin Lucifer lights that I wish I had bought on Ebay last year. Don't limit yourself to just E&J's.

Skootch....mine are original and they didn't turn purple. I don't know what causes them to turn but some do.

To get that purple look with the snowmobile lenses, try spray on window tint or a tinted clear. I don't think they make it the window tint anymore though.

    BTW...that's snow on my lights

The Whalen-Noxon lights in the picture are apparently aftermarket lights from the 30's. I've found two pairs this year (only have one now). Got one pair on Ebay with a*****py listing for $400 or $500 and found the other while trying to research the first set. They were an outfit out of New York that made them in the 30's. Still can't find a picture of the Lucifer lights that were on Ebay. Lucifer lighting is still in business but they made these in the 20's or 30's. They look like Woodlights but more extreme and with the Lucifer name cast into them to scare the kids. I've never seen a third set of Whalens or any other Lucifers.

From collecting a few bottles I learned a little bit of trivia about purple glass.

"When manufacturers produce glass, chemicals (clarifying agents) must be added to clarify the batch in order to turn it from its original color of aqua-blue or green to clear. Prior to the start of the First World War, manufacturers used Manganese Dioxide as their chemical agent of choice to clarify glass. When a jar or bottle turns purple from sunlight, manganese dioxide is the substance in the glass that reacts with sunlight to cause the color change. Russia was the primary source of this chemical.

When the First World War broke out, our source of manganese dioxide was cut off by German blockades. This sudden loss left glass manufacturers in a quandary and forced them to use another chemical, selenium, to clarify glass. After the close of the war, manufacturers did not return to the use of manganese dioxide. Selenium does not cause glass to react to sunlight like manganese does, thus glass clarified with selenium does not turn purple. Knowing this fact and the history above, collectors have another way to date their glass collectibles. If your jar is purple, it is a pretty good bet it was made before W.W.I."
I borrowed the above from; http://www.av.qnet.com/~glassman/info/b&e/primer.htm

I don't know why these lamps are turning purple but the lenses may be older glass?
What years were the E & J headlights first made anyway?

I have one of those purple bottles and it's some pretty stuff!

These are the Zipper repops. Fiberglass housing with machined rim holding a MC halogen bulb. Instead of using the drilled mounting bolt, I added a ferral (SP) so that I could use stock SS Model A conduit.
