I'm wondering if anyone knows if anyone is reproducing the Lakewood style 3 point roll bars? I know the originals are a bolt together deal, where different feet bolted to the hoop to make them 'universal' to many different (mostly o/t) ch***is, and likely would need to be modified to be legal on the track for a quick car, but for a street type deal with a compe***ion feel, they could be a good looking set up. I've seen pictures of 3 point bars in 60's FX cl*** cars like Comets, and others, and given all the straight axle ("g***er") rage going on right now, I'd think there would be a market for them. I'd like one, that much I know. I guess one could be fabbed up without too much h***le, if need be. Searching the web led to some muscle car sites with some discussion, but no real conclusion. Any leads on a repop, or an original?
Not too hard to make and I can bend one up for you , The big issue with these or any bolt in bar is liability, since there are better roll cages available. I am in Gardena
I made mine, but I took a little different take on the Lakewood. My third bar runs forward between the buckets so I didn't need to **** around with my back seat.
I am also looking for one for a Nova. I lent it to a friend and never seen again. I just want to replace it , not a certified race roll bar. Thanks, Bil
The only way they can be brought back into production is by welding a disclaimer plate to the bar itself in plain view. " This roll bar is for cosmetic purpose only and will not offer any safety or protection is case of accident, the use of this bar may cause serious injury or death if ever put to use. Owner excepts full responceability for it use and instalation." Even doing that Lakewood or any other Manufacture could be held liable if somebody copied just the design. Thats just the cold hard facts of the world we live in today. I would just bend the tubes and make the plates for the customer and thats it. It would be up to them for fitting, welding ,final install
I hear you loud and clear. I'd never trust my life to a true bolt in style bar, and the disclaimer and liability concerns you bring up are very valid points in the litigious society we now live in. My thoughts for myself are not so much a true bolt in (although there are companies out there who still sell bolt in style bars for cars and trucks), but more of a weld in, cut to fit type deal based on a more or less universal hoop and extra length legs, or modifying an original to be a weld in or for a template to make a new one. I think a system that can be welded directly to the frame or to the unibody using plates and braces at the tie in points for safety and rigidity would have a market. Gardena isn't too close, but isn't too far either. Just dreaming at this point (I have other matters to deal with before I move onto a cage/bar), but didn't know if anyone else out there was thinking or doing anything similar. Thanks everyone for the input. And Moon Rocket, that's a good looking set up you've got there!
If you want I can help you out with that project, we can bend it up and fit it right here in my back yard. I think I am less than a mile from you. I wanted to put that style bar in my Willys but didn't because I wanted to be able to take p***engers down the strip.
Yes, yes that is true. I'll definitely take you up on that when the time is right, thanks Kevin! As you know, my heap is far from ready for a trip down the 1320 (or even the 660), but when the other issues get resolved, we'll be talking!
Same here Kev. I like the look, but I didn't want to get h***led at one of the nostalgia events if a friend wanted to ride along. I did a simple 6 point in my car with the back tubes run high enough to allow access to the back seat for street use, and then turned down through the package shelf. kept my front side tubes low enough to make entry into the car easy, and not have to climb over them too much. No problems at this year's Billetproof drags, and took several buddies on runs down the strip.
I would like to pay someone in the Twin Cities area to bend one. I have a plywood pattern to help. It involves 3 bends I do not have pipe yet- 2-10 foot X 1.75 dia. should do it. PM me or call 612-850-3951 Thanks, Bill
I like the look of that set up. I am trying to figure out what is gonna work with my stude still. Might have to keep this in mind.
