Thank you Ryan!!! That is what we tell people all the time and some just look at us like we fell out of a tree. Ours are listed with the vet as mix breed to avoid being "hunted down" These are girls - Dixie Belle & Alley - The pit in the avatar is Sir Ruttles Deluxe Grand Master Relaxation Machine, my son's dog in his Halloween Costume - our family ain't right
Hey, nice dog and a good story. My sister has two of them, look just like her. They are the nicest dogs I have ever seen. When they travel and she books a room that takes dogs she tells them she has American staffshire terriers (The legal name for the pit bull's she has) and people always think of some small rat dog. Good dog to keep, the riff raff will stay away with her around. Cliff Ramsdell
Actually, they are two different breeds...........the American Pitbull Terrier is derived FROM the American Staffordshire Terrier. Almost identical, except AmStaff's aren't nearly as tall. Rather clever way to disguise a "shameful" breed. I did it for YEARS.......works wonders.
I have a German Shorthair that's insane (Cosmo) and a Siberian Husky that's dumb as rocks (Kinesis). The best friends my 19 month old daughter will ever have. That damn bird dog chases everything and catches stuff all the time. Kinesis is just big, furry and fast. Strong as an ox. Wouldn't trade 'em for anything (unless yall got a bone stock Model A 4-door).
Dad got his Lab from a puppy mill. The jerk that ran it said he was going to just kill her and her sister if he couldn't find a buyer. Dad's boss said he'd take them both off his hands. The guy wanted money or he'd just kill them both cause "it wouldn't be worth it" or something like that. The guy changed his mind at the last minute. Dad came home with her. She was so terrified of people that she curled up in a ball behind the brake pedal of dad's F-250 when he brought her home. Which made driving a real adventure. She's fineally realized that that part of her life is over, she's the nicest, sweetest, smartest dog we've had in a while. And she is VERY VERY protective of her people, which I have read is rare for Labs.
Good for you, karma will take care of you for giving a lost pup a home... Dogs are great, dare I say better that children
that's a great dog story, she's definitely a cute dog. i too am a dog lover. i've been around a lot of Pit Bulls and Rotts that are as sweet as can be. and i do agree that it's all in how they are raised and cared for. ever watch "Animal Cops" on the Animal Planet channel? FlatheadPete, that's funny that you're Husky is "dumb as rocks". we had one that was really smart but had this recessive wolf gene that made her really aggressive and dominant, so we had to give her up to a Husky Rescue.
great story, to bad about pit's, i grew up in a southeast san diego and lots of my neighbors were raising pits for fighting and at the same time there were guys that had them as pets that are the nicest lap dogs in the world, some f*ing thick *** pits that would scare the **** out of you. i like mutts. almost bought a rotty/dashhound mix once. 10months old, rotty head, width, length, fur, color, and dashhound legs, ugliest dog ever (weighed 95 lbs and came up to your kneecaps). ex-wife hated it, wanted a pomeranian instead. i like german wirehairs too. my divorice is final 12/06/05: time for a bender, yeehaa.
This is not the first dog named after me... but its definitely prettier than the last one which was a bulldog.
I remember when German Sheperds and Dobermans went through similar situations to what Pit Bulls are going through now. Though people now can't seem to mind their own business. Yes it's a shame, Pit Bulls can be wonderful dogs. A few bad apples are spoiling the whole thing. Great looking dog though... Should work out real good for you in the shop... Though I've been thinking of getting a Main **** Cat for in mine...
Congratulations on finding and keeping a nice dog who obviously needed a friend. Send me a PM if you want advice on keeping her healthy-vaccinations,etc.. Professionally, I have met good and bad dogs of all breeds. It may be their visit to the doctors, maybe it's me,lot's of times it is protection of the owners and most of the time it is a lack of training or discipline by the owners. I've met some nice Pits and AST's and most of the Dobie's I know are very sweet dogs. On the other hand, for me Rotties are guilty until proven innocent-I've had way to many close calls and I an't as fast as I once was..Again,maybe it's me and while this breed may be a good and loyal pet, they are not often well socialized and those teeth hurt, honey! More and more communities are p***ing breed related laws. It is the wave of the future. Rotts and Pits are on the list in Pennsylvania, right or wrong. I've got a list of my own, as does every vet I know. A viscious Lab will scare the **** out of you because you never expect it. A lot of homeowner's insurance policies won't cover you if you have a dog they think may be a problem. Dog bites are about 20-25% of all home insurance claims,so they are justifiably antsy. Y'all might consider checking with your agent before you find out that your Golden puppy licked a Girl Scout cookie kid who tripped and scratched her knee and you now have a lawyer and a plastic surgeon and a psychologist on your door step with bills for you.(That is not a joke). Anyway, enjoy your pooch. As Mark Twain said,"Outside of a dog, a good book is man's best friend." Then he said,"Inside a dog,it's too dark to read". Profound.
Congrats on saving a dog! We have a pit and a bull dog. Both very sweet dogs that were both saved from the pound. Here's a pic of the bull dog next to a box I just bought from Chandler.
