Here's the story. Last night with the help of some fellow HAMBers (PeteJoe, YoungBuck and T bucket Matt (the unofficial non computer user official HAMBer) we yanked out the old 6 and the front axle. Everything came out relatively well without much trouble. I'm going to go with the Mustang II with the upgrade to tubular a arms. The frame is so nice and solid I hate to swap it out with an s10. I plan on building more of these trucks so I'll probably go that route next time around. As for the rear I'm thinking a triangulated 4 link which according to my ghetto fabulous bagging expert (Young Buck) is the route to go. I'm still thinking about a rear end....open for suggestions. Thanks for all your help...I really appreciate it!
Oh, and one more thing...I'm just outside of Canton for whoever wanted to know a few posts back.
I'll post the progress pics tomorrow.

We should of had pictures Rox. Guys love to see girls with wrenches in their hands (among other things).
I about shit when I SEEN THIS GIRLS GARAGE.
She has more tools than most guys shops that are in business.
Her pop really left her with a nice setup.
Let me know when you're ready to install the front end.
And get that damn frame boxed:D

I used a mustang2 and a triangulated 4 link and bags on my 51 1/2 ton. I did replace the rear frame rails with 2x4 box tubing so it's about 6 inches narrower in the rear. The 4 link made exhaust routing tough.I mounted my bags in front of the rear axle. The only change i would make is to mount the bags behind the rear axle. It's a little touchy as far as rear ride hight and ride quality. Iv'e driven it daily for 2 years and no problems. And I do use it like a truck cause it is.

  5. I'd stay with what ya got- the S-10 drives ok but it makes for an extended build ~~time~~....also you will have to widen the frame -OR- and install a 4x4 s-10 rear OR you have to run wheels with 5" of offset to even get close to the original TRACK width=real funny lookin with the wheels back in the hole 5":D .....

I would rebuild the stock frt axle and install discs at the most- that will result in a good driver and it is simple.
sub framing and frame swapping is not for the first time builder-trust me on that.

So you're going the Must II route.
Make sure you use a heavy front sway bar.
In the rear, I used a disc from an 87 Firebird. Torched off the brackets and welded new mounts, bolted in. I also used the rear sway bar from said Firebird. I would suggest that too.

As promised...progress pics. Frame without a motor, how exciting. Oh and the last pic is of me and young buck.

I'm rethinking the whole bagging it idea after doing some research today. Looking into getting it good and low all the time....suggestions?

Well, it running a little over 50 views per post!! Less than 2% of us who look at this have something to say. Including me.

OK I'll say something. Welcome to the HAMB and nice truck. Good idea yanking that I6. I have one in my 42 GMC 3/4 ton. I swear my dog made more HP than that old thing. Keep posting the progress pictures, it looks like a cool project.

You know these characters? PeteJoe, YoungBuck and T bucket Matt. Oh boy! Me too and that could be scary! I guess I'm going to have to stop down and see this truck. Of course I'd drive the 52 F1 down.

    Later,Bill

Camaro Clip that thing and call it a day!
Disc brakes, front steer, big ass sway bar, power steerin',will hold whatever motor you could dream of installing, trans crossmember is already done,

and the truck gets lowered 6 inches, but the drivetrain and motor remain at stock height. (meaning you can still drive over stuff and not clobber the motor, etc)

whats more, lets say it is too wide at the tires,(even with offset rims),global west makes narrowed control arms.

there ARE no bad points to a camaro clip.
(including the fact that every part of it is avalible at vhato zone)

Doing great Megan! Keep showing the progress here.
It's always a good incentive for me during my projects.

If you're planning to Bag the baggin idea, the front end must 2 height is just a matter of what size drop spindles you want to install.
As for the rear....get yourself some above the axle lower blocks and pick your height.
I'm surprised Young Buck doesn't have his pee pee hangin out again.
    He's so gay.

  16. ive got a 49 gmc, that i have rebuilt then taken apart, then rebuilt and taken apart for the 3rd time now. Its now chopped, and halkf way though being bagged. I would really reccomnd the IFS if you can afford it. I got it in mine and i really like it. Drives a whole lot better.

As for the rear end early nova rear fit as well as camaro rear ends.

I dont see why you wouldnt bag it if you are already taking it apart. Take tyhe bed off, notch the rear, triangulaed 4-link and your ready to go. Especially if you put a IFS in. The bag kit it self you can either piece together, or buy a kit for as low as 600$. But its all up to you.

I personally in mine went with a built 235, just for the old school look. I have a Wayne valve cover and side cover for it, with the fenton headers, and the Off 3x1 intake. The motor has a Isky cam and is bored .60 over. The mailhead would be cool though. I thought about a rocket 88 motor that i had in the barn but i decided to save that for a different project.

The GMC rare compaired to the chevy. Its a nice truck and have fun with it. But remember, what ever you dont do now, you have to do later. Thats why im on my third rebuild. Build it how you want it in the end the first time. MIght take a little longer and more cash, but in the end you get what you want.

P.S. excuse my tryping, my Tbuckets altrenator decided to bite my left index finger this morning.

That is my plan. Built it right and the way that I want it. Even if it does take all winter. Hey...I live in Ohio, what else is there to do November - March? ;)

    Hey there!!!!
In the middle of a 49 right now!! I went with the Mustang II and have had no problems....also did it with a 53 ford p/u a few years ago. There are a number of companies that offer a good kit. I have many pics of my project through all phases of restoration
I also went w/ 4 wheel disc all around. the same kits that you can buy for the front end also come with a hub to hub version that includes 11" GM discs.
Let me know if you want the pics!

I would go with the s-10 frame easier than camaro sub-frame and a whole lot easier to get parts for. Besides you said you want to be low. Did you mean like this...my 48 GMC on a s-10 frame with air of course

    Progress-

Tonite PeteJoe, Tbucket Matt and YoungBuck and I got the bed off the truck. Frame looks good and solid. Can't say that about the wood in the bed though, oh well :( I also have everything out of the dash, getting ready to repaint. I was thinking something metallic..anyone have any good metallic dash pics? I can't get my pics to resize right now for someone reason, too tired to figure it out. Post pics tomorrow. Night :D

  21. I've seen dashes every color imagineable. My truck is red with a Ford white dash. My plan is to pinstripe the dash. I didn't sand and buff the dash either. I was concerned about the sun reflecting and causing vision problems during the day. As some more info, I used the coolcar liquid insulation. I'm very pleased with the results. Put that stuff everywhere before you start to install anything inside. This was after I welded shut all 42 of the holes in the firewall and built a new floor so I no longer had a flintstone truck.

The project is still alive and well. The frame has been stripped of all but the cab. I also got my '63 Riv and have started tearing it down. I plan on parting the entire car out, so if you need any 63 Riv parts (sans the engine and tranny, they're mine) get ahold of me. With the help of PeteJoe, YoungBuck and T-bucket Matt I am going to finish the Mustang II tonight. I am still trying to figure out what to do in the rear. I am thinking about using the Riv rear end...any thoughts, ideas or advice on that? Progress pics to follow tomorrow.
    Very happy ChevyGirlRox :D

So here we are, 8 months later and I'm still not done. It's not that I haven't worked on it or wanted to work on it, things just don't always happen so fast. I've had about 3 projects in between but now are getting back to business with the '48. Goodguys Columbus really gave me a good kick in the butt though. Here's where I stand... Mustang II installled, Nailhead extracted and in process of paint, wiring kit on workbench, new fan on workbench and rear spring kit from Chassis engineering on its way. I also plan to order that master cylinder/booster kit from Master Power that bolts right up to the factory pedal. Sorry no pics, haven't had time, maybe over the weekend.

Looking for some advice though on a couple of things:
-I was told when I bought the truck that the stock radiator was just recored, however I really question if it would be sufficient to cool a 401 Nailhead. From what I understand those trucks aren't known for their airflow.
I've been thinking about buying a Walker but just hate to lay down the clams do it though. Anyone have any suggestions on a radiator to use? Can I use my stock one? Anyone have any good or bad thoughts on Walker radiators? Better yet, anyone got a good deal on a walker for me? : )
-The other part I am dealing with trying to figure out is a steering column. I would like to use the box out of my Riviera parts car and use a column from a late 70s GM van, basic and simple. Anyone have any advice or experience with Riv box mating? Should I just use my original column?
Aside of that though, things really are good. It is good feeling to be back to work on it. Lately my family hasn't really gotten along the best and I can't help to think that when I get my truck done and the doors painted it will help them remember happy days gone by and to put their differences aside and remember what family is all about, sticking together. I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up though.
Thanks in advance for reading this novel and any advice you have to offer. And I promise I will take some pics!

Once temperatures reach 90 degrees all of my progress on projects comes to a screeching halt. My efforts switch to beer drinking and watching demo derbys at county fairs. You have all winter to finish your project.

Glazed tile block and A/C are a blessing. I am in agreement over the demo derby factor to the summer though. But I would like to DRIVE my '48 to at least one this year! :D
