Figured I'd share my latest project with the group, it’s a 1950 Mercury (fiberglass),(yeah I know it's not an original but neither are half the Willy's or 32 Ford's on the road). I bought the car from a company in Buffalo NY which has only produced 16 of these (mine is number 16). Full custom frame with the standard mustang II setup. The car is chopped, channeled 4.5", tubed, nosed, decked, frenched headlights & a louvered hood. So far the car seems very solid and very well built.

  2. Technically....it's NOT chopped, channeled, decked, frenched, louvered! That would imply the work was actually done.
I'd say it was moulded or layed, haha!
Kinda looks like mine when it was all black. Don't care for that rear window! Is that for a Shoebox?

  3. I like it.
    Nice chassis too.

    Looks good.

It may be glass, but you may have saved your sanity on the metalwork.

    Good luck on the build.

  9. I would love to go over this thing in person. Most glass cars are a compromise. I'd like to see how close it really is.

  10. Ummmmmm YES. it is Traditionally "Styled" Hot Rods, Customs, & Production Cars section.:confused:

  11. Hey Bob, I've seen a few of them hanging around your car at times... ;)

Cool project, but when everyone says "they don't make them like that anymore". You can say actually they do. Haha

  16. Wow! I had no idea these were being produced. Looks like alot of fun.

  17. I disagree. This one is really pushing those limits IMO. Fiberglass body, Mustang II, engine with a ton of billet accessories, speedholes in the front pan. None of these things say traditional styling to me. Other than it being a chopped Merc there doesn't seem to be anything traditional about this build so far.

even thugh it might not ne traditional and even though the body is repro looks cool anyway and i'm interested to see the progress

  20. I think it's okay. I can't say shit, mine is a four door. Ha ha. Is it just me, or do the wheel openings look a little wonky?

  21. Depends what wonky means to you.
    They look fine to me.

  22. It's all gonna depend on the direction the build goes. If it starts heading the Good Guys direction...i'm out!
If it is finished with a traditional style Merc in mind....i'm in. But,after seeing the engine compartment,it looks like you are heading toward billet wheels, and a Streetrod style Merc. Flush mounted glass,no stainless,no bumpers,etc...
I'm guessing it's gonna end up more like the flamed one below, more than the awesome other one...

Shot the car in sealer Sunday night, hoping to start painting this coming weekend.

  24. What are your plans? Are you gonna try to build it so it appears to be period correct? Bumpers, stainless, window trim, interior? Please tell us what direction are taking this...

Not planning on running bumpers for one major reason, since the radiator sits so low in the car I needed to add the holes thru the front to get airflow to the lower half of the radiator. I do have front and rear stainless moldings I've cut down that will installed when the glass goes in. I have bubble skirts for the rear and plan on running steel wheels with a period hub cap. I have a set of 50 Pontiac tail lights. No fake lake pipes or dummy spot lights. I also have a 53 Chevy grille I'm working on that I plan on using as my grille vs the imperial grille. No the cars not a period traditional 100% accurate car. I'm building what I think will look good with the funds I have. I'd love to own a steel merc but they stopped making them a long time ago and trying to find one on the east coast that is within my budget and doesn't need evey panel is just wasn't in the cards. I've built plenty of steel sleds (mainly 53-54 Chevy's), I found this car which had the styling I love and the price that I could afford and decided why not.

  26. It's gonna look BAD without bumpers! Doesn't the radiator line up with the opening? Mine has a 400 Ford, stock fan,and never runs hot. Don't take the easy way out!

  27. You sure got to primer fast without having to spend an eternity on sheet metal repairs. :) I think they did a nice job with that body from the looks of it in the pictures. Who made it?

  28. Can't you run some sort of ducting for cooling as opposed to the drilled front?
Bumbers would be much nicer for sure.

Agreed. I understand that airflow is an issue, but seeing your skills thus far tells me you would be able to easily make it right. Without bumpers the car takes a serious turn toward the dreaded street rod theme.

I vote bumpers, of course nobody asked...Nice car, have fun with it. I think we all understand the budget issues. Do what you can and enjoy life!
