Anti-Squeak Question

I decided to clean up the area behind the grill and in front of the radiator on my 55 Olds. I've noticed in the manual that it calls for the use of anti-squeak in several areas where parts are bolted together. Is this some type of tape or gasket and what is a good source for it?

 

Back when I was a kid and had no money, I used Scotch rubberized electrical tape (not the vinyl) as anti-squeak on my 31 chevy. It is still on the car and has worked very well. Went this way because no-one makes any of that kind of stuff for a 31' Chevy.

 

Most of the stuff I find on tear downs (or what is left of it) looks a lot like roofing tar paper. Anything that will keep metal off metal will stop squeaks.

 

The cloth tapes works well.

 

On my 32, found remnants of what looks like tar paper between wood and steel.

 

Ya know, on my 41-46 Chevy trucks there's lots of areas that would squeak if not for anti-squeak material. I found an old serpentine belt works great. I just cut, and glue in place with that yellow weather strip adhesive.

Today the automakers use a lot of closed cell foam very thin

 

I use electrician's "friction tape". It's sold in rolls in hardware stores and is cheap. Works great.

 

all sounds good, but the inner tube is easy & cheap & wont screw up your alignment of your sheetmetal -at least it worked good for me

 

I use left over leaf spring liner.

 

I also use inner tubes for stuff like that, or when it needs to be extra neat looking i get rubber/neoprene washers at ace hardware.
