I am in no way a master mechanic so be gentle with me. I just got a new starter and solenoid for my 52 Chevy and I was putting it together and hit a wall. As it sits there is no way the plunger will engage the solenoid. I have at least 3/4" between the shift lever on the starter and the plunger's bracket when the starter is fully engaged. Any suggestions?

Looks like the lever arm is backwards. Did it come like that?

You're missing an extension piece on the plunger it was used for fine adjustment on the drive throw into the flywheel. It was held in place with an 8/32 bolt and nut to the plunger and to the shift lever with a pin and a cotter pin. Check around your work bench, if you can't find it I can send you one on Monday when I get back to the shop.
Shift lever is not in backwards. Hope this helps.

Thank you! I double checked boxes and whatnot and no extension or the corresponding hardware at all. How much do you want for it?

Sorry it took awhile to get back to you I was out of town and when I got back the extension was waiting for me. Thank you again. I got everything back in the car but cant get anything more than a few clicks after trying to start it.

Like squirrel said, check battery and cables check and clean (file) grounds. Also check for voltage drop on the switch wire to the starter solenoid. You can adjust the shift lever adjustment a little and make sure the solenoid is pushed all the way forward before tightening the four mounting bolts.
