Last week I was out looking at another car when I heard about this 1938 Ford pick up for sale, at first I declined but the price and curiousity changed my mind. When I saw it, I had to have it, I still think it is ugly but it seems to be a cool ugly. I will be using it for an everday driver in the summer time, it is an all steel truck, rides and drives perfect and has after market working gauges, small block Ford V-8 (302) with A.O.D. trans. My request is to see similar trucks with different wheel and tire combos. I hate the wheels and tires it now has. Thanks Larry
you must not be a 38-39 person if you think its ugly...o, just kidding, if it was my truck, steel wheels, they are cheap, and put a back bumper on it, otherwise parts are for sale on the hamb to dress it up.....if you ask me, I like it...but I like every 38-39 ford truck...
Personally I like it and I'm with you about the wheels,,they don't help the looks. I suggest taking all the bumper over riders off and add a rear bumper. Get some steel wheels and paint them a contrasting color and paint the grill insert to match. HRP
Man, I hate to be lock step with everybody else, but a set of Ford steel wheels would fix that right up. Were it mine, they'd be black and use the typical Ford caps and blackwall tires - for the love of god, no white walls please. And a double YES to a back bumper painted black as well.
Is that front bumper with the tall overriders & horizontal bars a Ford factory extra just for Pickups or is it the same as passenger cars ?
I have only been able to see one other before and it was on a pickup truck. There have been a couple of suggestions to remove it, but I kinda like it but still thinking about it.
It may be a '38 but it has a'39 grille. The grilles are different but will interchange. PM me if you want to know all of the differences between '38 and '39. I've had my '38 since 1966.
I think the problem you are going to find is that not too many of these trucks have been rodded, therefore getting a whole gallery of pictures is gonna be tough. I can really only think of three or four people here on the H.A.M.B. that have or have had one. That's a shame too, as I have always liked these trucks myself. I dug though my stuff today and found some pictures of Chris's truck from a couple of years ago. this I'm pretty sure has stock wide fives and accessory caps. Threw in a picture of Bad Bob's too...
no, not ugly, looks like a nice truck i would change the rims to sometning like muttley had. i saw a bread/delivery truck in a salvage yard with this front end made into a motorhome it had wire spoke rims on it. i think plain steel looks better.
Here are a few random pics from my files (most have been saved off of various posts here), the last one is a pic of mine as I first saw her in a field wearing a set of 1935 wire wheels. By the way, yours looks like a '39 with that grill but says '38 with the hood latch. Where's the windshield regulator knob - on top of the dash close to the windshield (1939) or of the front of the dash facing the back of the cab (1938)? As far as looks go everyone has there own opinion, I personally think these years are some of the best that old Henry ever offered and have been very underrated. I'm in agreement with everyone else, loose the front bumper guard and add a rear bumper. However I'd make both front and rear bumpers chrome to add some presence to the truck. Good luck with the hunt for wheels - keep us posted on the your progress
Thank You, Just the kind of pics I wanted, the windshield regulator is in the center of the dash making it a 38, again you are right on the grill, I believe it is a 39. As soon as I decide on wheels I will post a couple of pics.
Those 38-39 Ford pickup grills are so different than anything Ford did before or since. Just love that look.
People either love or hate the front end styling, I personally think they are the best looking trucks Ford ever made. though I like them all. Lot better styling than the '42-'47 Jailbars.
Yes, I know what you mean, it is growing on me and I feel exactly the same about the verticle grills of the 42-47 Fords.
