I am working on a 31 Olds and like all cars of this era I have a huge hole to deal with in the roof. I am thinking of going with a sliding ragtop but it appears I will need to make that void just a little smaller in around 36x37" instead of the 40x40 it is now for the ragtop frame and rails to fit into.

My question is when others have modified their roof how did you deal with those 1" stitches around the perimeter metal where the fabric attached? I would like to fill them in as the ragtop wont reach that far to cover them. Thoughts on what works best here?

These are what I'm trying to cover or likely fill.

I would cut the holey area out and fill it in with metal and build a structure to hold the slide back roof. Jim (55willys)

I was hoping there was some sort of "easy" way to handle it but thats pretty much what I feared. I have reinforcing steel in already but its at the old edge of the roof, everything would likely need to be redone to the "new" edge of the roofline unless there is some sort of easier way to patch the holes. I had considered a backing plate and lead but thats probably a lot of work too.

No, just not finished quite yet :)
