Time to bring back an old thread! Lots of nailheads have been built since 2013! Lets see em! Here's one I liked from Pistons and Paint last weekend!
The carbs are Bendix/Stromberg WW's, the type used on early 50's Studebakers. I built the manifold and the bug screens for the carbs. Jim ...and more info on the carbs/intake?[/QUOTE]
Picture of my project coming together. Painted by Doug Haifley at the Haifleys Bros. 1956 Oldsmobile Festival Red. Polished parts by Russell's custom polishing in Phoenix. My buddy Jim helped me with the build up.
Hello, No thread about so called, Nailheads can be posted without one of the most famous of all Buick race cars. Way back in 1957-58 my brother and I were constantly wandering around the Lion’s Dragstrip during our 58 Chevy Impala racing days. There was so much to do for race prep, but when the action slowed down, we had time to wander around looking at the other race cars and most of the time, one or more of the Tommy Ivo race cars was just down the pit rows to view. 1958 This time with an Ivo stroker motor (including the famous Tommy Ivo, up swept individual header pipes...) in Daddy’s Auto Body FED, and some new colors... YRMV By early 1959, the progression had already started with the famous single Buick motor fuel injected FED that won a ton of elimination trophies at all So Cal dragstrips… Then one day, a new Buick powered race car was sitting in the pits. The Buick race cars were well built, looked outstanding and were successful in the weekly drag races at the So Cal dragstrips. But, like most hot rod/drag race folks, the need for speed was always playing in the back of the brain… So, the addition of the 671 supercharger and two port top Hilborn Injectors that other racers in the same time period were running, was added. So Cal drag race reports were ok but not overwhelming, like the injected single Buick did when it first came out to race. That was a very quick compe***ion machine and a few were able to top that injected only, FED. So, the 671/Hilborn Injection was supposed to be “it…” As nice as it was, it just did not have the results of the injected FED appearance and compe***ive wins in 1958-59. But, we only saw the 671 version on several weekends in fall of 1959. By the time the year was finishing with the biggest drag race in the Westcoast, a new Buick powered FED was created and shown to the So Cal drag race community. Jnaki And for you movie fans of the 60s, in the movie “Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow”, there is a scene in a garage. Those hot rods and drag race cars are pretty cool. Especially when one or more of them is Tommy Ivo’s early single injected Buick FED, plus the famous Buick powered T-Roadster Tommy Ivo, injected Buick FED in the background 1959 Tommy Ivo progression
Same engine as in post 193 but it now resides in my roadster. Same carbs with different manifold and home made plenum.
