Technical Plymouth tube axel, desirable part?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Tinbender, Nov 1, 2013.

  1. A buddy gave me a 38 plymouth axel. I have mixed feelings about it. Looks kinda cool, but I have enough parts to build the rest of my cars. So I'm not sure if I should add it to my stash. Are the orig brakes OK? Easy upgrades?

It was free and it won't take up much space, but, if you don't want it then p*** it on to someone who does, or at least has space to store it for the next guy in line.
If you're headed South then drop it off at my place....:D

They were reasonably popular on drag cars long ago. It would be traditional if you can't find a V8-60 axle and care about such stuff.

    Useless junk...

The brakes work great, however, I should say that since I couldn't find reasonably priced wheel cylinders, I modified my backing plates to fit early ford ones. Wheel bolt pattern is 5 on 4.5".

Just for the different factor, makes them desirable in my mind. King pins are a couple thousands smaller then fords, they can be hand reamed at home. Some people say the ford kingpin inclination is different if it is a truck alignment shop can bend to correct inclination. Doing the reaming allowed me to put 1949 Ford F-1 spindles on the axel, which will allow me to put common disc brake kits on. Good luck

As I recall, king pin inclination on 1937-38 Mopar is greater than 1935-36 Mopar

There is some historic land speed racing precedence also, if that helps you... Hell, the arguably most famous hot rod roadster of all time ran one for a while... with dropped ford ends welded on!
