This may (probably) sounds crazy, but.. might it be possible to put a 6-32 or 8-32 machine screw in a stud gun and zap it to a body panel, so as to be able to screw something onto it or grind it off later if not wanted? Br*** or steel?

  2. Should be doable. I have a large resistance welder at school with the attachments to weld steel threaded studs and nuts to sheet metal . Works great for mounting various components. Do a search for resistance welders on the net. You should be able to order the studs, and modify a stud welder to take them. Ours is made by A.R.C.

Funny this should come up. I don't have a stud gun welder so recently I tried welding studs to the panel using my stick welder. I worked well and I ***ume it would work about the same with a machine screw. I found that about 90 amps worked but I had to strike an ark for a second before pushing the stud hard in. Your stud welder would probably work even better. I need to mention my welder cuts its output just after the stud grounds out. Also it took some practice.

For the machine screws welding them with a tig torch or something would be best because without the shielding gas the weld is porous and weak.

Thanks guys! I may have to pursue this further. Just checked my stud gun though, a 6-32 won't even go in it. Guess you can buy bigger snouts.

I've used my small 115v mig with .025 wire to weld nails to the body to pull from... got an old vise grip welded to a collar that I put on my slide hammer, attach and wail away... :)

  6. The studs for a stud gun are .080 dia. Very close to a 2-56 thread. Weld your stud, trim to length, spin a 2-56 thread die onto the stud, and your set. smaller than you want, so use more studs.
