You are very fortunate in that accident; that's why I prefer a bigger vehicle for most of my driving, much safer. Your "T" is very cool!! Almost makes me want to gather more parts to go with the '24 foot stool block I have! Your top, I'm neutral!

I do think the black could look good although the tan brings in some very nice contrast. If the black top goes on, then I guess we should all start calling it Darth Vader's T!

I agree on the contrast....that is why I wanted a lighter top. Heck....I could make it reverseable...black on one side, tan on the other :D

"Oh no officer, That must be another '26 T Roadster you're looking for. See, mine has a nice tan top not the evil black rag described by the witnesses. Yes, I would have to agree that it is quite a coincidence that two different black '26 T Roadsters in the same town at the same time would both have the same license plate number. But......"

I was very lucky. This time around, I plan on upgrading to a truck....so I will have a larger vehicle soon.

Thank you kindly! You should start collecting parts....T's are fun and cheap! :D

Clayton, here some pics of the wheels. Apologize for the quality, cheap phone cam! I can get some measurements, may have to wait a few days, these are in a very soggy spot!! LOL!! We can talk the price, etc, later! Have a great day!! Mike.

Thanks Mike! I look forward to the measurements whenever you get time....not in a hurry. They will help my whip up some patterns to get an idea on their size on the car and if they will work.

They look like they might be No. 5 wheels...and hopefully not to big.

    Hi Clayton

Was going through some notes I have taken from your thread and see you mentioned a 'make your own overdrive out of a Chevrolet or Chrysler 3 speed box' do you have anymore information on this topic? I did a quick search but didn't come up with anything.

Ask and ye shall recieve :D.....

I have had this for quite some time and it is a gold mine of information on the subject. Just about everything you need is in this PDF. I think this document goes back quite a few years, but I got it from a friend in the local Speedster Club.

    Enjoy!

The amount of information and research that the author did for this document is amazing! The portion about building your own overdrive from a 3-speed of the period offers the addition of a reverse gear ( which the aftermarket boxes don't have), which elimimates the need to use the reverse pedel at all.

Three speeds and reverse--but where is the overdrive?

That is true, most of the 3-speeds of the period were 1:1 in 3rd gear...so no change would be seen in top end, but the advantage of more lower gear combination and the added reverse. I think there are at least a couple 3-speeds from those days that did have a taller 3rd...

You may also be able to use this documentation to work in a period 4-speed too..

Just turn it around and you'll have a 1 to 1 gear and two overdrives. :D

That is actually a really interesting idea! Your low gear would still be pretty tall....but a lower rear axle gear ratio might help combat that.

"Overdrive" would certainly be tall :D

There was a guy in Paso several years ago with an A that had a 4 Banger and two Model A transmissions. One was mounted backwards. He normally drove it with #2 trans in 3rd which was 1 to 1. With #2 trans in 2nd it was in OD and he said he could cruse at 70 mph. He said it wouldn't pull the high OD when #2 trans was in 1st. It was basically a stock A engine and I don't know the rear end ratio was. It was fairly common to use two trannys in home built tractors. They were mounted in series to produce under drive ratios. I have a few Borg Warner R-10 ODs from Studebakers. I have wondered about making one of these a stand alone unit to mount behind a transmission. It would mostly involve sealing the front shaft.

Stock A gearing in the rear axle is 3.78:1...so I bet with a strong healthy A or B motor, that thing would fly with trans #2 in 2nd or 1st.

The ratios in a standard A trans are:

    1st - 8.75:1 (32.04%)
    2nd - 6.89:1 (53.8%)
    3rd - 1:1. (100%)
    Reverse - (26.7%)

....that would make a heck of an overdrive!

    UPDATE
....I actually have an update to make!

Well, its not much of an update, but it's somethin'.

I had been having issues with my electric cooling fan, the one that it received on the side of the road in Meridian, ID on the way to Bonneville. It was held to the radiator using plastic pins and nuts and they held up quite well. I found them to be loose recently and this has been damaging the fins of my radiator, so I resolved to make new mounts to solve this issue.

Using the Shop's new 6ft vintage (1920's or '30s) sheet metal break, Chris bent up some really nice aluminum brackets. I added some large lightning holes for air flow and some stiff steel tubes to keep the brackets stiff and from flexing with the long bolts....and this is what we ended up with:

It all turned out great and very solid.

I also took the opportunity to switch out the incorrect "NAPA" hoses for the period correct "red" style hoses, correct clamps and proper lower tube.

I also spent a little time re doing the wood work on my steering wheel. It is steamed oak, but had been neglected and spent a bit of time outside. The wood was in decent shape and I oiled it years ago, but no clear......so greasy hands and years of use had turned it an ugly grey-brown and you could no longer see the grain.

I stripped the wood as best I could and started working it with 80 grit to get through to the clean wood. after about 10 minutes, the grain and the color started coming through and it looked like a completely different wheel. I cleaned it up with 120, 220, 400, 600 and 1,500 grit for a smooth finish....then a coat of stain that REALLY brought the color out and a nice coat of clear to seal it.

Sadly these photos don't do it justice.....I will get more when the weather is nicer.

    More to come....
