I am looking to make something a little different: a 35 ford pickup with a y block engine. I would like to use the stock ch***is but wonder about transmission choice and differential. I would like to have an overdrive and would be interested in what some of the "preferred" choices might be. Would a 3 +1 (Granada) transmission fit in well or should I consider a BW older style out of a 60's ford? How about a T5? Finally has someone out there set up an AOD with this engine in this type of ch***is?

If I would be running with 15 inch radials what would likely be the right 9" rear width for this kind of set up?

    Thanks--Pete

PS--Your help made that Model A possible. Thank you!

  2. I'm planing an A coupe with a Y block in it. I have '64 F-100 as a doner, was going to use it all, 3sp and 9 inch. I watch this just to see...

My y block came from a 64 f100. It came with a factory 4 speed and a 9in. It's geared for about 55 mph. I'd like to upgrade the rearend gears and ****** too so I'll keep an eye on this thread

I used a 9" out of a 66 or so F100 on my 1935 Ford pickup. Its too wide so I cut each rear fender down the middle and added a 2" wide strip of metal. Fits good, looks good now.
Any 9" differential will fit so you can use any gear ratio you want.

I too want to know which overdrive will work on a Y block
I used an 84-87 F150 fully synchronised 3 speed with overdrive on my Model A engine but dont know if it will work on a Y block

Building a 31A now with the following formula; 292, flat-o-matic adaptor, c-4, 9" with 3:50 gears, 31" tall rubber. Not an OD trans as you asked about but calcs out to about 2600 rpm at 70 mph (fwiw).

While I didn't do something as involved as what's been posted here I did install a T5 in my 57 Ford. Running a 292 w/3x2's & 3:50 rear end. With the 3sp @70 it would run 3k rpm's down the highway. With the T5 it runs around 2200. Only beef with it is 1st gear runs out pretty quick.

I had the 86 f-150 3+1OD in my '35 w/flathead. Gear ratio's too wide for the flattie, may be OK with the Y in your truck. Went to t-5, all is good now. Putting a y-block in a'29 coupester w/t-5 and 8", 3.55 gears, same as in '35. Y-block is quite a bit longer than flattie, so be prepared for firewall setback.

    1900 rpm @60mph Happy.

I setup the OD on a mech lever and solenoid in a switch works great

First-generation Ford Bronco 9". 3.50:1 gears were common, and would work fine with a T5. 58" wide, wms-to-wms, 5-on-5-1/2" bolt pattern.

I used a mustang t-5, mummert's adapter and an s-10 tailshaft housing to move shifter forward.
