Has anybody used a stock but chopped roof skin to build a carson top. I thought if you just filled the rear window except for where you need a small area for the new window, then pad the inside and outside what would be the difference. You even could weld in a few ribs for the look. It would be a lot easier then building a whole cage. Please tell me what I'm missing in my thoughts !
No reason you couldn't, but why? A finely done removeable hardtop is surely more beautiful and exotic than a Carson-style padded top, yes?
Yes,but I really love the look of a custom 50's car with a carson. Look at Oz customs 56 packard"Caribbean." Way to cool!
I too have looked into creative ways to use the original roof skin to make a removable hardtop convertible on my 53' buick; or at least use it to spec out the carson top. I came across this "build progress blog." They want to wants to keep the frame & stability of the hardtop, but wants a removable roof skin. Might be off topic, but pretty cool concept. Not my car. http://www.telusplanet.net/public/phovland/Buick.html
Sounds like you want a padded vinyl top. No reason you can't build whatever you want with whatever rear window you want. Some cars came from the factory with a vinyl top with a small rear window, all they did was make a plastic overlay to partly cover the rear window and installed the top over it.
