I have a bone stock 49 2 door sedan, it came with the flathead v8 along w/ manual OD trans. I looked up somewhere and it stated that this car came w/ 4.11 gears. Is that correct? Just was curious as far as when doing a motor/trans swap would it be better to just leave the stock rearend and put in a newer OD trans, or swap in a different rear w/ lesser gears and be able to run a th-350 or something you can get for a lot cheaper than an OD trans? I got a 350 motor for cheap, but was trying to sort out the transmission part of the swap. Thanks guys.
You've got lots of options. I believe the 3spds no OD had 3.73 and 3spd w/OD had 4.11. I've got a '49 with the original 3.73 rear, I'm running a flatty and a 5-speed to give me low highway rpms. Maverick are a bolt-in, I think, and they have a better highway ratio if you're not using an OD trans.
Don't forget about www.shoeboxford.com. I would be shocked if that issue hasn't been addressed in that forum before.
Non-OD rear is 3.73 and the OD rear ratio would be 4.10 (I am using a '51 OD rear under my A sedan). If you need to rebuild it you'll be having some real fun ordering bearings, races, gaskets, etc. from 4 or 5 different places. If you need ***istance locating the stuff I have it do***ented somewhere. Mike
these rears didnt change much on the '54 Ford did they? If they are the same i'd also be interested in that parts locating info you got
Alot of the stuff is the same, PM me with your e-mail addy and I will dig up the info and get it to you. I have to look through some receipts and then check the numbers...give me a little time. Mike
When i ripped the rear out of my 53 it had 4:11's in it......they were in pieces, but they WERE 4:11's....
hey, if its not a huge h***le, could i get that info also? I pulled the rear end out of my shoebox and am thinking about rebuilding it for a hot rod project. thanks!
Yeah , I just figured I might find out what year/make is the closest to if not a bolt in. Just due to the fact that a th-350 or 400 is always easy to find and a lot cheaper than a 700r4 or 200r4. My rearend seems to be in good shape so maybe i'll just find an OD trans, so it'll turn lower rpms ,cuz it'll see a lot of freeway time. I guess whatever turns up first.
I never have counted the teeth but the shop manual says that a non-o/d car is 3.50 & o/d cars like everyone said had the 4.11. Stafford
I post some pics on a new thread tonight...digging through rust piles today again at some old timers place. Here are some part numbers and place avail., note that half the time this stuff is on back order and you will have to reorder again. Front Pinion Bearing = 8A-4621 Pinion Bearing Rear = 8A-4630 Rear Axle Pinion Seal = 8A4676 Rear Axle Bearings = 8A-1225-A Gasket Backing Plate & Axle Housing = 8A-2256 Rear Wheel Bearing Retainer Gaskets = 8A-2245 Retainer For Wheel Bearing = 8A-1180 Rear Axle Seal = 8A1177-A Rear Axle Bearings = 8A-4221 Rear Axle Bearing Races = 8A-4222 Front Pinon Bearing Race = 8A-4626 Rear Pinion Bearing Race = 8A4628 Your best bet is to look at Mac's first, BUT call in your order, they back order everything it seems. Next is Dennis Carpenter Reproductions. I think I covered everything if I missed something let me know. Hope this helps. I am also double checking on the ratios but I still think the O/D diff is 4.10 if not I stand to be corrected . Mike
57 ford wagon=same length but the spring perches are offset a 1/2 inch wider and the gears are 3.5(4?)...same bolt pattern so you an use your stock rims. and its a 9 inch
Mid '70's maverick rears are swap in. 54" (I think) backing plate to backing plate. They still keep the 5 on 4.5? bolt pattern. There are 8 in rear end and will hold up I hear under moderate abuse. I grab rubber in 3 of 4 forward gears in mine all the time. I think some 8in's had really low highway gears like 3.00 . P.S. A friend of mine has got one for sale in Indy if interested. straycat62@hotmail.com
I am parting out 10 - 57-59 Fords if you want a 9" Price is $100 each. They all will need going through I am sure. The early rears are actually a 8 3/4" R&P I believe, but the 9" carrier bolts in also. I am located in Oshkosh, WI. 5 rears are accounted for from Tuck and Bobbleed, the rest are first come, first serve.
