Hey guys!!! I am building a 62 bel air with kind of a street race/ drag car thing goin on. Anyway, I am gonna put the battery in the trunk and probably gonna use a reproduction tar top battery. So I am looking for a battery box or hold down. I'm thinking something that looks factory, like if chevy actually put the battery in the trunk, what would the hold down look like? Any good ideas or pics????

Leave it up front, where it belongs. Or use an extra large battery, and put it in the trunk, in such a way that it's dangerous....then it will look "right", although it won't be legal if you decide to go drag racing.

Look for a battery box out of a 60's Dodge A100 van or a 60's Ford Econoline van. They both mounted the battery behind the drivers seat, and came with very clean looking boxes with sealed lids and vented through the bottom of the box.

That IS pretty cool franknfords, but I would like to see the battery. Of course if I did use one of those boxes I could save some jing on a cool tar top battery.

Another question for you. I was in the fleet farm today and sew they have commercial/tractor batterys that have the 6 screw on caps, they are a little longer than normal and have 750 CCAs. Any reason I couldn't run one of those? I remember reading once, back in the 60's they would use an extra large battery for the weight over the right rear. This would be cool.

Go all out with the weight...:D...Tractor supply has a wicked big and heavy 6 volt. Run two in series to get 12v and save up your money for the TON of HUGE copper cable you will need to get up front;)

I know the idea;). Just wondering if there is any reason that a "tractor" battery wouldn't work in a car. Should all be the same, right?

  11. If you want to use a newer type gel battery. You could hide it in one of those old insulated milk boxes that used to sit on everybody's front porch. If you want to use a big battery get a 4-D truck battery and just use flat bar and all thread hold downs.

Doesn't anyone make a battery box that looks like a 60's battery?

  13. Something else to think about. If you do put the battery in the trunk, to be legal at most drag strips, you need the following. 1-some sort of metal firewall between the trunk and p***enger compartment 2-a battery shut off switch that can be reached from the outside of the car that also must shut down the alternator.

Yup. Got em both! Just lookin for some cool ideas for a batt box. and battery. Oh, and another thought. I have found reproduction batterys that are Delcos autolight and mopar, what about aftermarket? I mean if your Delco battery went bad, could a guy replace it with say an Exide or interstate? How come you don't se any repro's of aftermarket batterys????

the repro market mostly consists of restorers, who are after the "day one" look...

  16. I'd almost forgotten about this....

There was a local guy years ago who wanted the 'g***er' look with a big trunk-mounted battery but not the weight. He got one of the local battery shops to build him a 'empty' one with the top loose/removable and he hid a standard battery inside it.
