Wife is dragging me to Baltimore, MD [actually I think Columbia] for a wedding this Friday the 22nd....So I need some stuff to drag her to....History, mechanical/auto related..Thanks!
The Baltimore Museum of Industry on Key Highway is a great place to check out. All kinds of displays from Baltimore's industrial roots...vintage metalworking and printing "shops", neon bending, chrome plating, several vintage cars and trucks. Very low key vibe...not your typical "museum." It's in a good part of the city, and on the south end of town so easy access from Columbia (probably about a 30-35 minute drive). Little Havana next door has great food, cold beer. Inner Harbor is definitely a tourist spot. Harbor East and Fells Point are only 5 more minutes around the harbor and have a lot more local joints (shops, bars, restaurants, etc.) If the weather is good there is a regular Sunday morning rod run 10 minutes south of Columbia on Route 29 at the northeast corner of 29 and route 198 in the Starbucks/Burger King parking lot (big largely vacant strip center). Regularly draws several hundred cars, a lot of rods and customs mixed with sports cars, muscle cars, etc. Good time.
don't overlook historic Ellicott City, 5 minutes north of Columbia, very charming place to take a lady friend, ellicottcity.net will give a nice overview, lots of artist type stuff.
Good call there ^^ And there's a great seafood restaurant and market just up the road from downtown Ellicott City called Catonsville Gourmet.
CURT - The "Church of the Holy Donut", on Sunday morning, is now in the shopping center on the other side of the road. We were thrown out of the lot on the Burger King side,,,,,,,it's a long story that had absolutely nothing to do with any of us.
No kidding. That's a shame...I guess they wanted to make sure the three businesses left in the old shopping center would get exactly ZERO business. If I recall the old shopping center across the street is actually where it started.
Baltimore's inner harbor area is always a good destination, and the B&O railroad museam is also close. Smithsonian is in D.C. less than 1 hr drive
That's correct. Moved across the street to the Burger King lot a few years ago when construction on the West side began. Starbucks must be losing a lot of business to Dunkin' Donuts now...
Ravens home game Sunday. Traffic may get crazy. If you can get in the city on Saturday you would be better off. You might want to check out the B&O railroad museum. The Inner Harbor is cool but you can too much time there quick. However it's just a short walk to Little Italy for supper. If you are a beer guy, ask about Max's on Broadway. Most of the time they have 20 or more craft bees on tap. If you do get in the area and need some more info. Just give me a call and I'll see what I can find out. Gene 410-982-4042.
Thanks to all, ought to be good trip..Been to the inner harbor [the dog too!] and cruised the bars at another visit...The Museum of Industry and the B&O will be the primary targets..We will get there friday afternoon and the wedding is Saturday night so hopefully the sights will open early enough for us to get a good day in on Saturday and maybe squeeze somethings in on Friday and maybe Sunday morn..All the city maps of the areas are colorfully marked in many shades of High Liters..lol..Gene, thanks for the help tel number....
Good stuff to know. My girl's dad lives in Ellicott City and we'll be there for four days starting Thanksgiving. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Baltimore update: Arrived mid afternoon Friday so too late for sight seeing so we cruised around some [got lost of course] and had supper at Eggstravaganza across the street from the Hotel which actually was in Columbia on rt108..The reception was at a Firehouse in Ellicot off rt100 about 6-7 minutes away... Saturday morning we started with Fort McHenry, cool place [cold too, 36°] lots of history there..Then to the Museum of Industry, wife scared the black smith [the wous] and I wanted to play with the Planer in the machine shop [probably could have handled a Flat head eight] but not allowed..The displays are very well set up..Then onto the B&O Railroad which also had very well set up displays, Steam Engine evolution up to the Diesels, didn't have time by then to see the movie or take the train ride as they would have been another couple hrs...Three great places..The reception [the wedding was a month ago] was OK of course I rated it by the food, talked to a guy that had toured the Winters QC facility, he said no free samples.. Sunday had breakfast with the bride and groom at the Eggstravaganza and then off for home, about 5hrs.. So thanks for the input guys, much appreciated.....
