History Stewart Warner re-issued GreenLines

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Richard D, Jan 12, 2010.

  1. Sorry if this has been covered, a search showed nothing.

Stewart Warner has apparently re-issued the cl***ic GreenLine series.

Has anyone seen these up close, how do they compare to originals? They cost about as much as a vintage set. How about a little history on the GreenLines?

  2. Seems to me I've read posts in at least a couple threads that S-W's quality has gone in the dumper, plus they're made in Mexico or something.

Well I installed a set in my '62 Biscayne but don't have any drive time yet. I chose the S-W Greenline Mechanical series in the larger 2 5/8 size. I seen the little "Made in Mexico" sticker on the back of them but I examined the gauges very carefully before installation and I thought that they looked pretty high quality and decent. I wanted a set of Greenlines for this particular car but didn't want to take a chance spending $200-$400 maybe on a questionable set of 40 year old gauges from the 'Bay. They have a matching tachometer also that nice, but runs about $220. We'll wait and see. I do know that Autometer sells a great-looking Retro tachometer for about $160 thats a dead ringer for their late-60's Tach but with updated internals. Don't know if you have a vintage Tach or anything yet but just let me know if need a link posted or anything.

I have a set of the originals...
    but they don't have backlights...

not sure if the new ones do...
that might be a reason to get the re-issues...

  10. Exactly the info I was looking for. I seldom do swap meets, last time I looked for some of these on EBay (a year or more ago) they were expensive and hard to find.

You have the Standard series gauges, and they (almost) never came with windows for lighting.

Actually, the old Greenlines in the Standard series are rather rare.

  12. I have an old green line tach here on my desk that will see some use once I convert it. It is back lit and most of the green line gauges I see are backlit as well.

I have not seen them at Happy Meal prices in the swap meets. I will take a set or two of functional green line gauges at that price if someone wants to off them.

I know that there is a certain prejudice about Mexicans here but the truth is that pieces made in Mexico are not the same as pieces made in China. There are a lot of quality car parts that come from Mexico and have been for a very long time. I personally have a hard time with the way that some companies treat their Mexican employees, I don't know if S/W is one of the offenders.

I run new S/W gauges and have no problem with them, they are accurate and fast acting. There is more than one quality level, if you go cheap you are likely to get seconds. I think the key with them or any company is not to cheap out.

  13. I have to agree on this.
