Projects 51 Ford F1 Cowl Vent Help

Hey,
So I am trying with not much luck to slide in the cowl vent into my 51 ford. I took the end of the handle off to give me more room, almost have it in a few times but I dont think I am doing it right. I know I have heard that there is a very specific way of getting this in. Any help is appreciated.
