with the resurgence in flake and lace, the next thing i expect to see come back is veiling. does anybody have a veiling gun? i imagine they aren't available new anymore, so one of you old farts will have to dig one out from under the paint bench...:D

(pictures of veiled panels would be nice, too...)

Few people have even seen a proper Vieling Gun,
the kind with the spinning head.

Usually it was done with paint that wasn't reduced enough.
Might have to pressureize the paint cup too.

The last Customrodder I got had a demo of the new 'dry' application metalflake on a late 50's T-bird. The panels they flaked over looked like veiling - blue dribble over white. Now I gotta go look in the 'library' in the ****per :(

OK after 35+ years of custom painting I've never heard of a "Veiling gun". What effect does it give? (pics *would* be nice :)
Dribble? Paint that wasn't reduced enough? Sounds like you might be talking about cobwebbing... (no special gun needed).

when i was a kid, there was a (very) jacked up, orange 64 chevy, with a black veiled 'bumble bee' stripe over the quarters and trunk. quite a sight back then, it would be a blast to see one like it now.

i've got a custom paint book somewhere that showed a gun, with dual, counter rotating heads, i think...

    Hey,

We just use ta use lacquer (nitro or acrylic) with little or no thinner, an
old siphon cup gun, with the breather hole plugged and a **** load of air
pressure. Play with the fluid needle on the gun' till ya get what you're
    after.

Ed Roth's Druid Princess had veiling on it's original paint job done by Larry Watson , It's on the cover of a Rod & Custom from the mid 60's. I will see if I can find it and post a pic...

I'm bumping this old thread because I, too, am interested in the veiling technique.

Anyone got some pics of the gun and, more importantly, the results?

I just got to see this...

Agreed, would also like to see the difference between veiling and cobwebbing.

The thin pink lines under the fogging in the white stripe is veiling...

And this of course, is cobwebbing...

    Hope this helps...

  15. These days the "vailing" would be done with a steady hand and an airbrush I would imagine , and the webbing is do-able with special additives and thinners , have done it in both lacquer and in gel-coat (popular in the latter in small boats and large panels to break up the glare and monotone large surfaces)

  16. I think Fritz Schenk has a veiling gun.He used it when he restored the Druid Princess.
