I should carry one... Today my alternator bracket broke and pitched the belt. Fishing around in the back of the truck, I first found a bungee cord, tied that into a loop and wrapped it around the crank and water pump. Got about 4 miles before that went away. Then I found an old bicycle inner tube and did the same, only got me a mile or so, too thick. Last grasp effort ended up getting me the last 10 miles home: electrical tape wrapped around the pulleys a bunch of times. Who'd of thought. Keep it handy.
I believe in a emergency Duct Tape would be a better idea. The one and only time I had a alternator bracket break I just removed the alternator and drove the 30 odd miles to my destination. HRP
I once used a piece of clothesline rope, tied with a square knot. Lasted for 20 miles, got me home. IT was the water pump I wanted driven...
had an early seventies chevy sbc motor that tossed a fan belt, i took the power steering belt off, put it around the water pump and pried it around the lower pulley. i had no charging or power steering but i did not overheat and i made it to the parts store.
Unlike you I was fortunate that I had a double belt system that allowed me to travel to my destination. HRP
Buddy of mine got caught way out in the country with a broken fan belt. Took his girl friends ***** hose and tied them together for a makeshift belt, got the girl friend home and him too. Next day after he sobered up, he went to parts store and got a new belt, was putting it on when his wife came out, seen the ***** hose and hit the roof! Needless to say, he was in the dog house a while after that!
Yep ***** hose works good. Yeah might be a good idea to let the wife kno before hand why there is ***** hose in the emergency kit.
I was about a mile away from the base when I lost a belt on my 72 Monte. Fortunately my boot laces were long enough to make a temporary belt.
A handy hint if you are using your wifes/girlfriends ***** hose - make sure she is out of them first.
