Hey fellas. I am at a loss. I've been searching for some spindles for my '31 Chevy axle. I want to switch the original mechanicals over to juice for my current project. Any one have any ideas? I'll be able to get the measurements tomorrow when I can get it out and on the table.

You can adapt 51-59 chevy truck front brakes to your original spindles. Use the truck hubs for 6 lug, or use 51-54 car hubs and drums for 5 lug. Use the original 31 inner bearing inner race, because the spindle is smaller there.

The backing plate bolts are different size, possibly different location, but you can make it work if you can fabricate stuff.

Thanks Squirrel! I was actually going to ask if I could just use the original spindles. THis is what happens when i over think things.

Are you wanting to go to a five lug hub, or stay w/ the six lug?

I have a '29 Chevy frame, staying w/ the six lug, so I got a front axle from a '52 Chevy 1/2 ton truck. Same spring pad spacing and spring width as the '29, w/ an improved brake design from the '30's-40's Huck brakes.

Note that the spindle kingpin size and caster angle are different from '29 to '52, so you can't do this with a simple spindle swap. Replacing the axle, spindles, and brakes all together makes this swap simple, though.

    Later, *****6

I am wanting to go to the 5 lug but I'm not set on it. But, if a '50s GM front axle will do the trick, I may go that route.

*Edit* I just found a bunch of them on an auction site. I will go '50s GM axle setup. I'm on a budget and ready to get this thing rolling (no pun intended). Thanks *****!

51-54 is what you're looking for....55-59 axles are quite a bit wider. 50 and older have the lousy brakes.

You use truck backing plates, and car hubs/drums for that swap. Years listed in my first post.

on my '33, i used '51 chevy backing plates, brakes and drums. i needed to put spacers in between the backing plate and spindle. i am not sure if they are/were the original spindles tho, because the car when i got had "42 chevy brakes, backing plates and drums.
