I had read a story of a guy picking one up for the cost of an outstanding repair bill of something like $500 in the 50's.
Was this thread about how we could use our knowledge of latter history to make ourselves into millionaires, or about what new automobile we would choose, had we had that opportunity in 1957? If it were simply how to get rich, my choice of new automobile would rank way down on my list. If my intent was only to gain wealth, I would be seeking out the people and businesses whom I would know would succeed. Then I would soon enough have my choice of as many expensive classic automobiles as I desired.
For me it would have to be the Lincoln Continental Mark 11 with the 368 cu. in. 300 h.p. engine. One of the best looking cars of all time and only made in 1956 and 1957. 444 were made in 1957.
That's a good question. My choice of a '29 deusy has nothing to do with todays value other than it's WAY out of my reach today. I'm interested in the car, not how much money I could get for it. Always wanted one since I was a kid. Since the thread is about new cars, I like the eldorado biarritz convertible.
I would really want a 300 or a fury but I think I would pick a 57 Dodge Sweptide 315Hemi custom Cab, in blue and white two tone….
This wasn't a new car,new '57 was the question. The FE was definitely available in 1957 as was the special option 2 four barrel setup and transmission. There is one sitting in the Collection at Masons Rod Shop. HRP
The FE was first available in 1958 in 332 and 352 cubic inch forms. In 1957 Ford did have a 312 with two-fours that I recall having 265 hp, but no FE was available in '57. Could have been a proto-type that you saw. Also the first Tri-power FE available was in 1961 as a dealer installed option to the 390/375hp engine making it 401hp.First four-speed was also 1961 as a dealer installed option. Back to the original question. I would be torn between the Ford tudor sedan Custom 300, 300hp "blower car" stick,OD and the '57 Black Widow FI or 2x4. Couldn't go too wrong with either.
The FE's first model year was 1958. Dual Quads were available as a factory option on 57 Fords and T Birds, they are known as E Code cars. The original Ford advertising listed them at 265 HP and Ford later changed the rating to 270 HP. I currently own a 57 E Code Ford. The 61 HiPo big Fords did come from the factory with 4V, or 6V/3 2's, every one I saw had Overdrive. 1962 was the first year for Ford factory 4 speeds. I bought a new 62 Galaxy 500 XL convert, 406 4 speed, sure wish I still had it. I attached a picture of my 57 E Code engine with large factory round dual quad air cleaner.
Tough call between this and the D501, but I think I'd take the Corvette. Can I get the 4.11s and ht? And yes, like someone said, day 2 chromies, and a brand new set of hedmans. Pin drive halibrands would be too ostentatious...
This said rich uncle has deep pockets-connected to the factory to order a 1 of 1: Black 1957 GMC Suburban (their version of a Cameo) ANY GM big block w/dual quad-tri power induction. Red Maximum deluxe interior. And in the bed 3 more crate motors from BOP 'cause the dual 4 bbl Caddy in the frame rails is lonely.

57olds- that '57 Olds is badass. A buddy of mine in high school had a '58 Olds. Christ, that car had A Lot of chrome. His was 371 4v as I recall
Tough one for me, as '57 sources 2 of my top 5 factory cars : either the Adventurer hardtop or a Tri-Power Pontiac Super Chief 2-dr hardtop (don't care for convertibles).
well if it was real late 57 and since i am dreaming a 57 500 with Merc 383 with a paxton supercharger and three speed with an overdrive. and hell black on white and black.
since I was just born I would probably want to ride in something safe, comfortable, relaxing, and practical maybe something foreign...
I would have to say the Buick Century that three piece back window and the roof line does it for me, but I do also have a love of the 57 Tbird!!!
