Has anyone here ever made or installed a non-original-to-your-car wiper transmission? My current project has the traditional rest position of laying to the left side of the windshield. I'd like to change it to they rest opposite each other to the middle....like a mid-50's Bel Aire. My windshield uses 12" blades so I dont need the shafts on the end of my mirrors to make it work :p Would be easy to drill holes in the cowl - car is an empty shell at the moment.

My car has stamped transmission parts - no cables. I was even thinking of making my own parts and modding what I have.....but how to pivot them to make them work in that pattern is another thing. I could find no pics of a transmission like that to see how it was arranged.

Goofy question.....but something I think would be cool.

Can't you just pop the wiper transmission tower arms off the drive cam under the dash and flip the position? HRP

I don't know....can I? Not being a smart***...is that what would make the right one reverse?

The entire transmission is stamped steel parts - some engineer who loved his Erector set made it. It wouldn't be hard at all to make new / longer parts to spread them apart. If it matters, the Aussie's had them that rested to the left, so those internals exist too.

I am ***uming you are referring to the caddy in you avatar,,I am not familiar with how the are set up but I am guessing they worked on a cam at that time like Fords & Chevy's of that era. HRP

Nope - no Caddy....far out of my pay scale. I just love them is all. When my own car is done, I'll change it.

This is how the gearbox is designed - the left side is a mirror image of this one, which is why I asked if anyone had ever swapped in a transmission from another vehicle altogether.

It helps when asking questions to specify what kind of car you are working on,,trying to speculate on your particular application is difficult at best.

What drives the arm on the tower,,,is there a remote winshield wiper motor with two long rods? HRP

    Yessir.

I have a feeling I'll either have to forgo the idea or find one that is situated like I want and adapt it to the car.

  9. I put a set of Specialty Power Window wipers in my 37 Dodge. They use the cable/rack system that uses a nylon gear on each transmission. This system is very adaptable to almost any application. The only limitation I found was all wipers must move the same number of degrees of movement. I bought a 3rd transmission so I have 3 across the top of my windshield.
If you can't get your direction reversed on one side with the factory system, you might consider this route.

I just re***embled the OE transmission and think it'd be tough to do. They aren't cheap either, so destroying one to prove/disprove a theory doesn't thrill me either. If I'm wrong, I'm out alot of $ to get back to where I was when I started.

I will definitely look into them. Thank you very much! :D

  11. My 57 has a Chrysler Sebring wiper motor connected to the left pivot arm. We welded arms onto both pivots,1 up and 1 down. There is a drag link between the 2 arms. They park where I shut them off though....it was simple to do.

So how do you get them to park? Just shut them off when they're flat?

Funny that all the mid 50's Bel Aire's had these wiper setups yet I cant find a single pic, feebay auction, etc of the wiper transmission. Would like to see how they setup theirs.

That SPW site looks good. Will call them Monday to see if theirs will do this.

I think you've got a 2nd issue to consider. The location of the transmission! On systems like yours the wiper transmission for the p***enger side is close to center of the cowl, so having it work the opposite direction means they will interfere with each other, unless you relocate the transmission farther towards the p***enger side.

I figured on moving things out a bit. There's plenty of room and the car is currently a shell so easy-er to do at the moment. This is why I think a whole new setup is the way to go. The transmission is mounted on kind of a cage - if necessary, I'll use it again to mount the new setup.

Kind of a nutty thing to dwell and spend alot of time on.....but still beats watching DWTS with the wife. lol
