I just received my Jan issue of Hot Rod Deluxe and low and behold there is an excellent historical 6 page article about the first? gmc blown roadster written by our own Marty Strode. Congrats Marty, it is a great article. Well done my friend.
That is an excellent article, thanks Mr. Strode. How about putting up some pic's of how it looks now? Where does Blairs goat with the Benz charger fit in this timeline? On an unrelated note : Did anyone else notice HRD saying the Halibrand 4 slots on the yellow `34 cpe are Palamides?
bowie, thanks for the compliment. As far as the Benz blower, it was Don Blair that Jack was referring to. Here are a couple of photos related to the article, that weren't used. And for those who haven't seen the magazine, it is about a friend of mine who was 18, when he built a 27 Track Roadster, sporting a 6-71 blower on a flathead in '47, along with doing some phenomenal workmanship back then.
I love it! So much history, and nothing I love better than reading about (old) new and innovative ideas in the world of hotrods! Such a refreshing change form all the same old stuff rehashed.
HRD has so many technical blunders and historical inaccuracies in it, I've stopped counting... I'll have to pick this issue up, looking forward to reading Marty's article.
Romeo Palamides started American Wheels with a four slot magnesium wheel. Not sure Halibrand ever made a four slot.
primed34: The only Romeo 4 slots that I'm aware of have 4 larger windows. The earlier having eyebrows on them. Marty Strode , thanks for your reply.
falcongeorge: Thats cool you found both make 4slots on the same car. Most of the Hal ones I've seen are 16" ; wonder if Palamides were all 15"?
The new hrd (hot deluxe is not the first thing that comes to my mind when I see those initials,)finally showed up,Marty's article is an excellent read. Really good stuff.
Marty Strode "Cub Reporter", checking in. Thanks again for the kind words, along with the kidding. I learned a lesson years ago from my old friend and author Albert Drake, if you get a chance to talk to some of pioneer car builders or racers that you respect, you should try to get the conversation down with a recorder. Whether you, or someone else does something with the info, it will not be lost. I have news for Jack M, (AKA Captain Jack) I may look like JB, but I sing like Roy Orbison!
Really? Roy Orbison? Man...my hearing must really be going away.......It was a really neat article, Marty.......Hope to see you in the New Year.....

Paul, You are partially responsible for that article, as you were the one who introduced me to Scotty, that led to me writing it in the first place. My comparison of my singing to Roy's, might have me "Running Scared"!
