these are off my 283 The Machinist called these powerpacks, my question is- are they-, and are they worth rebuilding?
    Thanks,

I always thought power pack heads had a triangle on rectangular base cast into the face of the head

looks like the late 50s heads, for a 2bbl or truck.

Casting number and picture of the combustion chamber would help us help you figure it out

    Squirrel......stagger valve cover bolts...pre 60 for sure..
The boss on the end looks like 69 up..but it's not drilled..
The big chamber is also confusing ...
I remember some c60 early heads had similar bosses to mount air compressor..
Not your run of the mill power pack heads for sure

The ends with the bosses were common in 58-59, they were used for air suspension compressor or something.

They are definitely open chamber, they are not power pack which had closed chamber.

549 casting number doesn't show up in my 59 parts book. Either 2bbl car or a truck application, most likely.

casting date K ... 8 means they're from near the beginning of the 1959 model year production run

The shop wants a couple hundred per head to rebuild and update for un-leaded fuel. Are they good heads to hang onto, or should I buy new ones.
    Thanks for any advice

if you are building a 283 to for a truck, to run on today's gas, then they should be fine. If you're building a hot rod engine, you might want to find some power pack heads, but the stagger bolt version seem to be going for some bucks. I sold a couple pairs over the past few years for about 500/pair, as cores (they needed a valve job, etc)

Thanks for the input, I will use the heads I have, it is for a daily driver 57 3200 truck, not really a hot rod however, I just did a custom finish on the frame mostly for durability
