Projects KIWI MADE 1927 T Lakes modified - Journey to the end of the road!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by woodbox, Mar 31, 2012.

  1. I am suffering from serious workshop withdrawls! Spent the morning hanging family pictures in the house for the cook!
I think I need another project!
Hmmmmm what to do, what to do!

You do really nice work. Having built a few race cars I know the work involved. Just a comment and definitely not a criticism, to achieve zero bump steer on a solid front axle the centerline (actual or extended) of the drag link should intersect the centerline of the radius rod chassis mount. Your set up will most likely produce minimal bump steer. Had your pitman arm/drag link connection been centered on the radius rod mount, you would have acheived absolute zero bump steer. I had a discussion one time at a show with a man who worked for Zipper and had one of their roadsters on display. The pitman arm was vertical upwards from the steering shaft and the drag link attachment was at least 12 to 14 inches above the radius rod mount. I asked if bumpsteer was a problem and he replied, "No, the bars are parallel." Wrong. Parallel is not the answer.
Your work is excellent and I will watch for the finished product. Keep up the good work.

  5. I guess that is the only logical answer!

Thanks Buzzard. I spent a lot of time trying damn hard to build as much bump steer and bad characteristics out of this car. I am pretty damn happy with the way it has performed so far, considering it is 100 year old tech and riding on bias ply tyres.
I never understood the logic behind people having the pitman arm halfway down the wishbone swinging through differing arcs?? It makes no sense to build bump into the car? Go figure!
    Thanks for the compliments.

  6. I have a complete car to start on this time. A 1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe, But I owe the family some time in the workshop on some projects for them. A bit of cabinet making is in the wind for the summer around here. The cook is getting a new hip next week, so we won't be going far for the summer, maybe just a few day trips to the beach for the kids.
I am itching to get down and dirty on the next car............is there something wrong with me?

I don't think there is anything wrong with you, I'm working on an HA/GR project (over six years now with some "medical delays") and already have my next two vehicle projects in the design and parts collecting stages and in between have started building cigar box guitars in the last two years (17 builds done so far with about 20 boxes on the shelf for the future builds). Been retired for the last 5 years plus and wonder how I ever got anything done before.

I made a CBG for my daughter this year too! No Cigar box though. made it all on a wing and a prayer. I was pretty damn happy at how well it turned out......for my first foray into the wide world of making musical instruments. I can't play to save myself......but that's not the point!

  12. I was talking to a neighbour on the drive tonight about getting one of those 1000ltr IBC plastic containers in a steel frame. I plan to put the molasses/water mixes in it, to have a dip strip system going for all the panels. With the top cut open I should be able to fit whole guards, bonnet and trunk lid etc in and completely submerge them. There might even be a bit of demand from other members in the area for it too!

I won't be posting pictures yet, as it is jammed in the corner with a whole heap of crap in, on, or around it. Soon my young Padawan!

  13. I do quite a lot of small bits in molasses.
Works great, then I just give it a wipe over and spray with Gibbs Product.
    All done and looking good.

  14. What ratio do you use? I saw on here that 7:1 water to molasses works.
Where do you get the Gibbs product?

When I was in Kaitaia we used it now and then, mixed 10:1 but 7 or 8:1 would be ok. It's nice and gentle but doesn't 'key' the piece for primer ,and is pretty slow so I wouldn't go overboard on using it.

    just my .02 Wade

  16. 7 to 1 is what I use

Get Gibbs Product off Mike in Hamilton

Nice build. I'm still teaching myself to play, but having a bunch of fun building and have several good musician friends who have played mine on stage so I know that they sound good in the hands of a skilled person. Here are a few of mine in group shots and my three favorites. The first one is now being used by one of my musician friends. The second with me in the picture is my favorite, "throw it in the back seat and take it along" build and the third one is a venture into the "steam punk" world that sounds amazing through an amplifier. Half of the fun is every one has it's own voice and you really don't know how it will talk until you string it up the first time.

I have used Molasses in the past but just a bucket full gets pretty stinky so I hate to think what 1000 litres will be like!

There is a thread on Ozrodders about using Citric acid as an alternative, so I have just ordered some this morning. I have a couple of rusty window reveals to test it on so will report back when it is done.

  20. I have seen the citric acid method on here. Apparently evrything comes out looking orange!

I am hoping to get big enough in the container to be able to do doors, fenders, trunk lid etc.

  21. I spoke to the certifier yesterday. My plate should be ready to pick up today.
I also spoke to the upholsterer and I should be able to drop the car to him for the week next week, so he can do the cover. We will be away in Auckland for the week while the cook gets a new hip!
Tomorrow morning I am booked in to see the LTSA man to jump through the hoops for rego and warrant.
This Sunday is the club Christmas BBQ at the beach, which I have no intention of missing!

How do you like driving the car with the Brooklands screens? I'm planning on using them on my build...if I ever get that far

I have an original painted 1920 radiator shell that I'm planning on using either the molasses/water treatment, or the WD-40 Specialist rust remover...but will not be repainting it for probably a couple years. Would the Gibbs Brand Lubricant be a good preservative for the mean time? After the Gibbs, how do you prep for painting?

  24. I wear glasses and a beanie hat. It is like riding a bike looking over the visor.
If I look through the screen the regulations require, wipers, washers, demisters, visor etc. But because I look over the screen, none of that applies.
I have goggles and a brain bucket to wear for long haul driving. We have a lot of trucks on the roads all over the country carrying logs, and they can tend to drop bark in transit, hence the brain bucket.

  25. Check their website. http://www.gibbsbrandlubricant.com/
I have painted straight over their product and not had any issues.

  26. We have our club Christmas beach party today. I still have no plate yet.......which I am over now! Taking the car anyway. Booked for rego check on Wed first thing.
I had to confirm for the cert people in head office that my axle was in fact an OEM 46 Ford item. There is a certain amount of paranoia about axles since there was one break, but is was an after market cast one.
The cook is getting a new hip tomorrow, so I am hoping to drive back on Tues night to pick up the cert plate, fix it to the car ready for Wed, if it turns up! Then back down to look after the boss while she recovers.

  28. only one word for it.....AWESOME

  29. It was that for sure!

Please excuse the "soft filter" on the pictures, I think that is probably sausage and burger grease! The sun was sooooo bright that I could barely make out what I was taking pictures of on the phone screen!

I see Rods 58 in those pics, obviously not working on my project.
All the best for your wifes operation, I have had a double hip replacement so know what she is in for.
    Cheers
