I have the banjo rear end that I took out of my 47 Ford and was thinking it would be good to use on my future Model A project. I've done some research and found out that it's wider than a 40 rear. So I went searching for pictures of Model A's with a later banjo rear end, just to see how much of a difference it actually makes. I didn't turn up with much. There's gotta be guys running this set up out there somewhere.

So Model A's with 42-48 Banjo's, LETS SEE EM!

  2. I've got one in mine. I did a spring over setup like a model a rear and used model a spring hangers the way Chris did but had to use some machined spacers (1") to space the perches inward to get them the same width apart as an original model a rear end. I also used the original tube shock mounts. Can't seem to upload a pic from my iPhone so will have to when I get home on the computer.

As far as width goes for a fender less car it hangs a little out but I think it looks fine. If you were to backspace your wheels it'd cover it a bit more.

They are all hard rear ends to find here and that's what I found and it was in great condition so I used it.

It only seems noticeable when with fenders.

I got one of those. '48 rear in my A roadster.

    I used 4.5 x 16 Ford rims & 7.00 x 16 tires.

Anything thinner and the rear really looks wide.

What rear crossmembers are you guys using in your Model A's with the later, behind-the-axle, springs?

I used a 32 Brookville frame and made a simple mounting plate off the rear crossmember for the original 39 rear with original spring...

Looks great! The wide tires help out a lot. Thanks for posting.

It's hardly noticeable. I'm not going to worry about it.

I'm thinking I'll put the spring perches from the Model A rear so I can keep the stock rear crossmember.

Here's a 30 roadster with a 32 frame and a Model-A rear crossmember and spring running a '42-'48 rear axle I built last year. It's quite wide on the roadster. On the Zed framed 30 Tudor ch***is I built this year the '48 was only just wide enough.

  17. Heres a pic of how i did mine. I used Model A spring perches like Chris did, but then also retained the original lower shock mounts and had to have some spacers machined up to suit. From memory i had the perches inboard of the shock mounts. So the spacers went between the axle tube end, and the perch.

And you can see here how it sticks the wheels out a little.. But i think it looks fine.
