Well here is the rest of the story...the 40 Packard coupe was at a warehouse auction sale here locally. It was sold today along with 14 other cars, 4 of which I was interested in. I didnt get any of them! (doh!!) There was a 48 Cadillac sedanette that sold for $5000. the 40 Packard coupe that sold for $5000, a 61 Austin Healey Sprite that sold for $2800, and a 1939 Lincoln Zephyr convertible coupe that sold for $9500. I came the closest on the Zephyr with my bid of $9K. I am sending along some pictures so you can see I am not BSing. All of the cars today were sold because the owners failed to pay storage rent on them for over 5 years. The Zephyr had been at this warehouse since 1995!

  2. Like it is, it would make a great tail dragger custom. If you want to hot rod it, think outside the square. Biff the fenders. I know cars of this year dont generally make good fenderless hot rods, but it can be done. Throw a box section ch***is under the body, biff the hood, keep the grille, and chop it. You would need to cut n shut the body a little, but with some imagination, and maybe a clever photoshop guy, this could be done. Edit. Went and read previous post properly, and id missed that it got sold.

BUY IT!!!!!!! and do a custom, or hotrod or whatever... and don't worry about whether you will be able to get your money and/or time out of it if you ever sell it, if that was a criteria for even starting a project there would be about 90% less projects being built...
nothing is more cool that a none-ford/chevy rod! Be original and unique! and definitely KEEP THAT FRONT GRILLE!!!!!! :D

okay didn't get the reply in time before you posted that it sold for $5000.. a little high in price but still it would have been a nice car to work with!

They really aren't that heavy, compared to say a muscle car. I weighted my 1940 120 4dr sedan (350/350/9") and it was only 3350#. About the same as an early Camaro!

Missing out on that Zephyr convertible for that small amount must hurt!

Or a cl***ic look that isn't seen every day like my 33 Imperial which was built using an All Mopar theme including a supercharged 392 Hemi, Dodge 518 transmission and Dana 60 rear end. Visualize a build along those lines and you'll have a Packard "one off" that will get some attention because its different.

    Corndog,

I thought about driving up to South Bend for that auction, but it was so frigin cold Friday morning I p***ed. On the auction sites web page they also had a picture of a silver early 30's sedan, maybe a chrysler, but I couldn't tell. Was that car at the auction and what was it?

That car was a 35 Studebaker sedan and was not included in the auction. I asked about it and was told that it mistakenly got photographed by the auctioneer but was never supposed to be in the sale. You didnt miss anything as it was well attended and most cars went for retail or higher. The only deal may have been the Zephyr but since the original owner was bidding on it who knows how high he was going to go. That's why I dropped out.

Hey, Corndog, that would make a really nice cruiser. In fact, that straight 8 should pull an A/C unit with no problem, if you desire. Packards are very cl***y, hotrodded or not.

  15. Hey so I just found this thread, I bought the Packard that this thread is about from the guy who bought it at the auction. I paid 1500 for it and it's the same as it was the day it left the auction.

I am going to chop it, tail drag it, rear skirts. In case anyone was wondering what ever happened to it.
