I'm sure this has been discussed before but my forum searches have yielded no results so here goes, I was wondering if its possible to use an early flathead generator with the integral mount on a later bracket style installation by either removing the mount if it is screwed on or cutting the mount off. I know the 8ba generators are perfect for this but it seems easier to obtain a 59a style generator and at much more reasonable prices. My engine is a 59a but due to the triple carb manifold I can't use the stock mount option. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Why don't you just purchase an offset mount bracket that bolts to the cylinder head studs problem solved.
I have the offset mount but they are designed for a later 8ba generator that doesn't have an integral mount built into the generator, so the use of an earlier flathead generator will require some modification to the generator which is why I posted this topic. I already have the bracket which is this style That's why I'd rather modify an early generator if possible Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Yes there are offset brackets made just for the early one piece generator. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Offen...-Mount-Generator-Bracket-Pass-Side,36766.html
Guys, I know all about those brackets, etc, etc. what I wanted to know as per my original post was not if other brackets were available, but wether or not the mounting lug on an early genie can be removed to make it more similar to a later genie. More patience, better results. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
You could saw the mount off the front end bell. The case should be the same diameter, so the original strap mount would work. If you're going to use the narrow belt, you'll have to change the pulley.
what I'm getting is he what's to use the 1947 back generator and not the 8BA style later unit....there had to be something a little earlier that was being run...
Thanks ttpete, it's this sort of info I was after, glad someone understood me finally ;-) Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I think you can also use post flathead Ford generators (6 or 12) on the late type bracket. You can easily drill a hole for the locator pin, it is some nice even dimension, or ditch the locator if the strap seems to have a good grip. There are a couple of different diameter late pulleys to use on this, not sure of Canadian usage but here '48 Ford and Merc, '48-52 trucks. Work for aesthetic would be about the same on the various combos, cut away the mount on an early or grind off that ridiculous flange on a later one. Be aware that the late type side mounter is pretty fragile, and you should be very careful adjusting the belt tension...fat belts do not need much, just pullittight by hand and don not go for the 36" tire iron.
