I have a 33 ford truck with a 1954 California ***le that has a 9 numbers\letters ending in (CAL). I don't see any numbers on the frame because it it so badly weathered. From what I've looked up about the numbering process I'm Wondering if the number/letters on the ***le are a new ID given by the DMV in 1954 when the ***le was issued.

Anybody have some ideas on how I can solve this issue?

That sounds like a California ***le ***igned to a vehicle with no original paperwork. In my experience these ***igned numbers (don't know Calif specifically) are on metal tags with official stuff plus hand stamping, and will be on body, unlike Ford # on frame and trans.
Such an ***igned ***le is about the only legit non-original ***le...and may be your best hope with frame number rusted off. It would be MUCH safer legally than bought paperwork or restamping the frame.

My first thought would be to ask someone at the DMV.

    Bruce is right.
Years ago I bought a Model a with an ***igned "CAL" vin number / ***le.
The numbers were stamped on the frame near the steering box
    Should be no problem.

Was the "Cal" vin number / ***le on the frame or did yours still have the Ford # visible still?

Best bet is to check with the DMV. I have not seen the "CAL" letters in any of the frame VIN's I have checked. The VIN on the ***le will have to match VIN on the frame for DMV to register it to you. They will probably make you have it "verified" by a DMV VIN verifier or any CA law enforcement officer can verify the VIN. (It's just another DMV form to be filled out and signed by the verifier)

I have had a few old trucks with a "cal" number. This is the system they used before the ***igned vin of today. Most trucks used the engine number when ***led in CA. If you changed the engine then it no longer matched, thus the ***igned cal number. From what I understand, you stamped your own number on the frame rail and cup inspected the number was there? But this info is from reading, not first hand. One i had was drivers frame rail and one was p***enger side frame/ side. Had to really look. But I would guess you would find it somewhere on your frame, good luck.
