Got a 47 Merc saloon with new Vintique hood hinge springs but cannot for the life of me get the hood to pull down/latch at cowl end - any suggestions? Every time we close and push down it pops back up - but there is nothing fouling it.
Try raising the hinge to it's highest mounting point on the cowl. The hinge has an "over center" action that needs room to pull the hood down.
Thanks but hinges already at top point - spent ages on web browing pics of hoods n hinges from similar models and found that springs appear to go on either way - just wasted another hour on it today but still cannot get it to lock down. I've got pics of them but don't know how to post them!
I'm restoring a 47 convert and see the hinges are really under designed when you see the weight of the hood. At shows I see a few have gone to an after market that's design with a lot beefier support and stronger spring. I'm still tearing mine down to sandblasted and weld in patch panels. Let me know how you solve this! Don Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I got tired of fighting with hood springs-took them off and replaced with one of these; http://www.hydeproducts.net/
We've had that same problem...both in the '47 Merc in my avatar and a '48 Ford coupe we had years ago. Although, pushing down once closed always worked.
I fought the hood on my '41 for years. would come down tight on the cowl but would bulge out at the sides. Finally I removed the springs and 2 piece lever that the spring was mounted to and everything fit perfect. Installed a fold up prop rod like the newer cars have.
I have a 47 ford and hood does,nt close down good ,removed webbing and is better. I just bought the car and in paper work with car, someone bought hinges. I don,t think they are right ones.I also bought another car a 48 ford and will try those hinges .Ford and mercury parts maybe difference.
