These are great photos of true rusted out classic cars in a field taken by my friend. Does anyone know if the cars are still there? They were on US 341, north of Cortez Check out the photos. http://travelgumbo.hoop.la/blog/a-field-of-rusted-dreams.
I swear this has been on here before, with info about the cars for sale. I'd love to buy the whole deal, land and cars together.
Found it. North on Rt 491 (Cortez CO) where it meets up with 23. Address in upper right of below pic. Not much left now : 13155 North Broadway, Cortez Say, is that a chopped Marlin right there?
Thanks WQF9B! Impressive searching everybody! If anyone knows what happened to the cars, please post. For those of you who haven't seen them yet, my friend really did take some great photos. I saw a similar junk yard in West Virginia, and I'll do a blog about it one day if I can dig up the photos. there was more vegetatation and the cars were harder to get to.
It is on my route to Bonneville. About 3 years ago most of the cars disappeared from one August to the next. No explanation as to where they went.
I was there in 1987, when the acreage of cars was probably better than 30 at that time, and solidly packed. It was still an operating salvage yard, and the owner let me wander the yard. This place is not too far from 4-corners, in southwestern Colorado. I believe zoning laws changed, and forced the owner to crush a large portion of the cars in the nineties sometime. I went by again in 2007 on a cross country road trip, and only a small portion of the cars remained, many had been flipped on their roofs for scrappers to easily torch engines out. Nobody was around the property that day, so I did not venture any closer than the roadside. ---John
Sorry, everyone, for leaving a mystery when Travelrobbb posted about my Colorado graveyard pix...didn't mean to get the wrong highway number in! My pictures were on Aug. 4 2007, so not long before when bigM saw few remaining and cars flipped on their roofs. I guess I was just in time. The owners did say that they were trying to clear the space for other use. Don't know which is sadder...all those dreams gone to rust, or all the rust gone forever!
We were working outside Naturita in 2005, and would go to Cortez to eat occasionally, and scout around for all things automotive. I don't know how I missed this when we were cruising the countryside, maybe we passed it at night.
Most appeared to be solid cars, although the alkali in the area had rusted out some fender brows and rear wheel lips. Floors in most were quite nice though.
Hi guys , well the yard has changed alot, I remember big M stopping in to my shop, about 2 miles south of the yard , "pard "who owned the place passed away a month ago , so I've been dealing with his widow . I went up today and picked up a few of our cars ,and moved a few others down toward the front of the yard as she has sold the bask 35 acres it was running bat 65 ac in its hayday . mwe needed to get them moved before snow fell ,and it started as we moved the last car . I'll,post some recent pics after dinner . sad thing is vultures are raping the yard and shop ,like to catch em at it
customrodandrestoration- It's good to hear the rest of the story. Thanks for sharing! Did you get a chance to see PHeymont's album? http://travelgumbo.hoop.la/blog/a-field-of-rusted-dreams It would be cool if one of those cars in the photos is still left
Hi customrodandrestoration.Don't forget to add your photos.I know I and others are really interested. Thanks again
looked on my camera today ,but the pics are not as good as I hoped . The google maps pic that wq59b posted on page 1 is pretty accurate , I need to look thru my lap top at the shop to see whats on it , also need to look thru a big box of pics to find some from late 80's. I'll post what I can find
Hi guys ,don't know if this pic will work ,lets see ,I took this one yesterday .as you can see it's pretty empty . sadly a lot went to the crusher . Bill
Thank you so much classicrodsandclassics.I am so impressed how this puzzle was solved. And sadly yes these fields our slowly disappearing.I guess though it makes us appreciate the photos and existing places all the more
having lived on the Florida coast the last few years,I can assure you rust Takes it toll on the cars here. I know though there are some dry places out there, so Hopefully we can all let eachother. Know the fields left
that Cortez yard was called 4 Corners years ago. wife is from Cortez, just a few miles from the yard, and I used to wander there every summer starting back in the 60's. still have many pics taken of solid rebuildable cars in the yard. I get them out & cry over them sometimes. some years ago they had the crusher set up & most of the good stuff either got crushed or shipped out. sure wish I could have brot a few home back then.
