You need to read the this thread from the beginning to understand the build concept . You appear to be in the early stages of understanding the American custom car and its history. If you want to learn more about the early years of customs get to the Rik Hoving & Kustomrama websites. This will get you started but dont say I didn't warn you . You can get lost there for days.

Me too. The car was displayed at the Pete a while back, and the color is gorgeous in person. My hesitation about using it is that there is a HUGE difference between the way it appears in person, and the way it photographs.

The Lincoln bumpers were popular accessories back when; I suspect that the cutout in the middle was to help with airflow into the grille, since the V12s were notorious for overheating. I think that middle section looks awkward and unfinished, though, so this wouldn't be my choice.

Thanks for the insight. I think that the finer particles of early metallics are the most suitable for the implied period of this car.

Sorry, but I like 'em -- and Edsel did too, as evidenced on his '34 Speedster and the original Continental prototype. There's a pretty strong likelihood that I'll pick a metallic color for it.

I agree that flat or satin paint works best to display the car's shape, but they're wrong for what I'm doing here. Thanks, but no.

    My old friend
Just my .03 but that caddy painted the rootbeer color would be spot on. Use a camel color for the top and interior.

Thanks, Fuzzy. I think it would look good in root beer too, but I still have several alternatives to pick from.

    Hey Tony,

On the subject of " Firemist '' colours.................

These did, as Larry pointed out, look like 1st generation try-coat finishes. I was never able to sucessfully blend a Firemist colour ( kinda like shooting a candy job) given all the '' razzal-dazzle '' in them.:D The early Firemist colours from say, '63-'69 were much more subdued, by 1975 most of the choices offered looked like a Vegas floorshow, and only suitable when you went with the chrome swan on the hood, and the " Full Chicago '' interior option.:D My '64 Eldorado had a Firemist colour called " Icemist '' ? and looked kinda like that Corvette colour, without the cheezy, plastic look of a 70s colour.

Today's try-coat finishes all look the same to me with a different base colour slid in underneith them ( probably all from the same source) but earlier examples did not!

Matt finishes are for dash boards and garnish trims, not for exterior panels;) Faux patina is like a bad hair piece in the painting business:D

Tony, GM had a color in the mid-late '50s called Persian Sand. It's hard to say if it is a shade of brown or lavender.

It's elegant, looks nice, and is uncommon. And for a subtle color, it really catches the eye. Maybe?

    Car is looking amazing!

    Hey Tony,

Persian Sand begot Camio Rosewood in the 70s, and were both Cadillac Motor Division colours, but not Firemist colours. Persian Sand looks great on '60 Eldorados, but would probably be a better colour choice were you painting a vehicle for your mistress, rather than a '40 Ford droptop kustom:D

Thanks for the suggestion, but Squeeg's top looks nothing at all like the one we designed (with quarter windows), which was the whole purpose of this project in the first place.

I had the seventh E-Jag delivered in San Francisco in 1962. Ordered British Racing Green, came in "Charcoal Gray". With the red interior, it was a combination that couldn't be turned down, and the combo really attracted attention!! I didn't have any problem living with the Charcoal Gray------

Don't forget to check out colors on "foreign" vehicles in your search-----

Sounds really pretty. I'm sure I wouldn't have any trouble living the grey either; it's just that it has become such a popular new car color that it's overworked these days.

The cost of this outstanding project is none of our business.

I'm not offended by the question, but I wouldn't answer it if I could. Of course it's an expensive project, but I choose not to keep track of the running total. It's important to me to complete it, and I'm fortunate and grateful that Don is more than fair in what he charges me to realize it.

    Thanks, Fuzzy.

That is one of the reasons why you are such an extraordinary guy Tony. I love you love for the design. Your eye amazes me.

I paid Don a visit December 5, and as always there were a couple of new things to see.

The whole grille has now been polished. Huge credit to Don for how well this whole fabrication looks like it belongs in a '40 Ford:

The dash, column, and wheel have been mocked up. This is a hybrid of '40 DeLuxe and Standard bits, with an instrument cluster by HAMBer Mj40 using a MoPar speedo. Stock radio, clock and ashtray openings are eliminated. Paint colors are just to help visualize the color break and are not final:

Here's the 289 that was in my '56 when I bought it. It's been freshened and warmed up a little:

That was all on Thursday the 5th. The next day, Don emailed me this picture. Apparently the car fell apart overnight:

It has since come the rest of the way apart. The frame has been blasted, all the welds have been made good, and the rails are boxed:

I'm sure the New Year will have many new surprises. Can't wait.

  25. It is looking oh so good! Don and you are nailing it in every way possible! Hats off to you guys!

Don is right, Tony. You're going to have to chrome the bumper irons and the inside of the bumper. It's coming together beautifully.

There is no thread on this site that is more interesting than this one. I used the grill build as inspiration to build my own grill for my 39 Deluxe with the exception of making it out of mild steel first to get the understanding of how it will go together and then out of stainless for the car. Turned out great!

Keep the pictures coming of your build Tony!

I have an alternative solution in mind that we'll try first.

Thanks again for the kind words, guys. Genosslk, can we see the grille you built for the '39?

I tried to load up a few build pictures but I couldn't due to something called "a security code is missing" from this site and I have to contact an administrator. What is that?

I'd suggest sending a PM to Metalshapes, who is an admin on the site and has participated in this thread often. He can probably sort it out.
