The GM locking door handles will work only on the p***enger side as the latch mechanism on the driver's side has no lock mechanism actuated by the key. Factory handles do not rotate when locked like the universal aftermarket replacements.
When I was in the business of making reproduction parts we spent a large amount of money in development of the locking and non-locking Chevy door and locking deck handles which were sadly never put into production. This was 25 or 30 years ago.

looks like you are the man to talk to. is it possible to get any of the earlier locking handles to work in a 38 truck, by modifing the shaft or making a new door handle ferrule or ? .

That is a good breakdown for the parts.....wish I would have had it, that little pin #16.385 holds the whole lock together... took me awhile to figure this out :)

Using the parts manual (page 761), it looks like the only handles/parts/years are from 1935-1938 right front and back door, part number 474991.

The 1936-1938 GM cabs door latch mechanism had the same interface on both sides, to attach the handle. There is a square hole where the handle shaft went through the door latch mechanism, with the handle restrained by a bolt into the end of the shaft. I've never seen a lock mechanism that is activated by a key on the right side on these trucks, the 1936-1938 Chev/GMC.

I'm not going to argue about the factory handles not being able to rotate, but all of the right hand outside locking door handles that I've had, look just like the one on http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/parts/1929_54/758.htm ; which rotates.

Depending on the alignment of the inner door trim and the bolt that holds the handle on, you might not even have to remove the trim to remove the handle. A 1/2" socket is all that is needed to remove the handle.

My '37 Chev 1/2 ton has locking handles on both side, both sides spin when locked. How'd we do it? Well, Dad kicked the bucket 5+ years ago and he's the only one who knew. But, if I recall, we had a 5 gallon bucket full of handles and we kept trying until one worked on each side. Both are held in by a special cap screw on the inside and both have square shafts. I'll be working on another '37 this vacation so we'll see what pops up. And, no, I don't have the bucket full of handles anymore.

Do you have a picture of the Briggs & Stratton part #307088 that you bought? There is one, a Briggs & Stratton part #307088, on Ebay for a Packard; which doesn't look anything like the one that is my 1938 Chev PU handle. Maybe we are talking about two different things. I'm looking at the whole lock ***embly that goes into the handle.

Fordcragar...The one I took out is in the below pics. The new one that went in looked identical. This kit did not have the spring, (2) small steel wedges and small steel wedge connector, had to re-use my old ones.... The exterior "barrel" is also not included. I needed to re-use the old one...

Basically a complete handle with lock is needed for this part to work....

    Tom

PS...I did look at that Packard lock, you are right, does not look the same...

Tom, I took mine apart tonight and it looks exactly like yours. I'm going to take the lock down to a locksmith tomorrow and get a key made for it. I was looking at the Packard lock, thinking I could change the guts and have a key, but it is different.

Larry, I did the same thing. Talked to a locksmith down the street from me, and he said he could make a new key. I found the one on-line before I took mine to him.....

I did end up getting this lock to work by taking it apart (I think it was really worn out) and used the key in the picture with a small file to get it to work, somewhat.... :) Did not think it could be trusted though, and did not want to have to break a window.

BTW.... when you go to put it back together, that barrel that goes around the lock can go on more than one way... but the lock will only work properly when it is on only one way....you may put it all together and find the lock does not work (it will work but you can open it with a screwdriver or your finger-nail). This is the barrel ***embled wrong, when it is right only the key will work..... don't ask me how I know this... ;)

Those are definitely not '37 truck handles. The truck has two completely different handle bodies from the locking and non locking sides just like the picture fordcragar posted.

The Ebay ad said that they thought that they were replacement handles. Then they said they believed that they were 1934-1938. My Chevrolet Parts and Accessories Catalog list the correct handles as 1935-1938; which those don't look like. Bit who knows, maybe they will work.
