HRP I'm a noob in every sense. You did say you have a gift certificate but in case you're ambitious it is great after you get it done. It took a long time for me to work up the courage to replace my carb with a fresh rebuild. I kept the old still kinda working one while I was replacing just in case. After a week of aggravation and help from some good folks I got it done. *Make sure you get good cores and get a carb book (I learned the hard way). I just picked up rochester carburetors by roe and fisher. You can get some cores for cheap sometimes less than $20. I'm still a novice on a good day but now I won't hesitate to mess with my rochester. My problem was weak idle at a stop, load up when warm and hard warm start. After the rebuild I swapped in some new plugs too. Both made a world of a difference.
I had a coil that did that. Went to advance changed the coil and wa la! It was real sporadic acting and impossible to diagnose. Made me so happy it was just the darn coil. I was about to rip into my carbs.
It really sounds like an ign problem....by gm I ***ume hei ign? Got another dizzy you can drop in and test out?
Guess it depends on what you mean by flood, fouling plugs or belching fuel up the secondarys. Keep in mind I'm 400 miles away so I can't see what's happening. The edelbrock carbs are notorious for belching fuel up when hot, a simple insulator between the Carb and intake works wonders for this problem. But it usually acts up on hot restarts more than any other time. Those carbs are usually trouble free and I like them a lot, so maybe I'm just trying to find something else to blame..
Jim - I made an ***umption based on his original post of using an e-clone. I am still old-school in that an intake manifold fits EITHER a spread-bore or square-bore carburetor. Those that truly believe that one size fits all well should try walking a mile in the shoes of one's spouse He did state that he wanted an automatic choke. The 3720, as original, came with an automatic choke requiring a heat stove. The Carter electric choke, which came on carburetors not fitting in the "traditional" side of this forum, may be used in lieu of using the much better heat stove type. Personally, I have put electric chokes on two of my own vehicles, each with terrible results. In disgust, I removed the last carburetor and rebuilt a carb with a manual choke....much happier. I suspect electrics MIGHT function in Honolulu, San Diego, or Miami; but since I don't live in those areas, I don't know for certain. Jon.
Q-Jets are great. I have a spotty track record with rebuilding them, but I know a local shop that does them right. I also like a Holley 2BBL on a stock Chevy 2BBL manifold. Bob
Hey man,I appreciate any and all ideas, thoughts or guesses, and yeah, gas starts running out all over the intake. I do have a phenolic spacer between the carburetor and intake. I have Edelbrock carburetors on my deuce pickup and ladyhrps wagon,,never a problem with ether one of them. HRP
You just answered your own question...grab the gift card and get another Edelbrock. The 500cfm with electric choke. You can thank me later...
Looks like you answered the question yourself, although I like Quadrajets too. I made a pretty good living playing with them until fuel injection came along.
Edelbrocks are very forgiving but they are quite picky on 2 things. Fuel pressure and cleanliness, satisfy those 2 and they are a set it and forget it type part. They can get funky inside thru the air bleeds if you don't have a good seal at the air cleaner base. You could try swapping carbs with one of your other cars and see if the problem goes away on yours and follows to the other. Really sounds like your float is lazy on maintaing the proper bowl level.
This is what I think also. I was just having the same problem on a motorcraft 2 bbl and it was simply the needle and seat. I went the long way around the woodshed to figure that out because I had rebuilt it less than a year ago. I just couldn't believe it would have gone bad that soon but it did. New needle and seat and shazaam it was instantly fixed. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
edelbrock 1406 600cfm electric choke........ we've used a bunch of 'em at work lately with zero problems. we used a few of the summit carbs a year or two ago and they were pretty good right outta the box to. i got us a better local deal on edelbrock and we've been using them since....ken...
When you go looking at carbs for street use, think about STREET use!! That means mid-range and idling performance will be paramount. WOT will be but a fond wish most days, unless you are truly in the middle of nowhere. So. Get a carb that can be tuned for mid-range (Rochester), as well as great idle performance (Rochester). Having a good WOT (Rochester) isn't bad, either. Add in overall tuneability (Rochester), and you're well on your way to a great carburettor (Rochester). Sure, having a lot of tuneability can cause initial confusion, but that IS what is necessary for great street performance. Cosmo
We have a winner - 1406 with electric choke from Summit ran fine right out of the box replacing a Q-jet on the '70 Cad 472 in my COE - waking it up after sitting 18 years. Before I even climb up into the rig - I reach in, push the pedal to set the choke - reach up, turn the key and she fires right up every time. Q-jet sits on the shelf, tempted to get it rebuilt and back on the Cad. Then use the 1406 on the Dart when the new Poly SS manifold arrives. But I most likely will go the new 1406 route again......
Ok here's my .03 I always run Holleys. Very simple carb with only a few moving parts. Just set the PV for the cam you have and put the right jets in and your done.
I have a edelbrock 1406 on my SBC and have had no troubles manual choke unhooked and starts ever time. I have jets and enjoyed them when tuned right. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Nothing against Holley carbs, ive run them in the past, but I have been tinkering with the q jets for a few years and find them to have much better drivability once set up. More then once have I pulled a holley off and replace it with a $10.00 swap meet q jet and have improved drivability and gas mileage. Plus its alot of fun sitting down with your buddy, a couple beers, and a box of drill bits drilling out the idle circut and then saying "ah ****, got any solder? I need to plug up a couple of holes" Gets them every time ......Q jet guys will get this.....
An HEI can exhibit a similar problem. I've seen a bad pick-up coil (inside the HEI) shut off the engine only when it gets hot. Try cooling down the base of the HEI when it starts acting up
