I read on here where someone said that you could use a 57 chevy passenger car windshield for a chop top chevy truck 55-57. The shield will allow for 2-3.5 inches of chop. Can anyone confirm if this will work? I realize that I need to actually chop the roof but it makes sense to start with a shield and modify roof to fit. Thanks
Thanks man- looks like I could make it work but the posts would be more straight up and down. Really depends on the width side to side. Is a 57 the same as 55?
55-59 trucks are the same as eachother. There are 4 different 55-57 windshields. 55-56 sedan and hardtop, and 57 sedan and hardtop are all different. There's no way the car windshield will fit without a lot of cutting, and then it's probably curved differently too. You could try to make some templates to see....but my guess is you'd be better off with a truck windshield.
Wow you think no kidding it's a different piece of glass that wasn't my question so I guess that means you're going to answer for the rest of the hamb to appreciate your input but thanks for squashing the question
The rest of the HAMB answered with their silence....I sure didn't squash the question. If anyone knows definitively that it will work, I'd sure like to hear, too. Did you spend some time searching for the thread you referred to in your first post? I know we have had some very knowledgeable glass guys here, maybe there's a magic trick...
I did send a PM to noname who had mentioned it in an earlier post but I have not heard back and his website is disabled
Carl La Fong, My signature was given to me by a fellow HAMB'r that was agitated that I gave away a 55 chevy part for free to someone else before he could arrange to pick it up over a week later... My signature should say "no patience" as I cannot stand worthless posts from those like you that offer no value or solution to the initial question. I guess that if I had used the correct punctuation then maybe you would have offered some value.
I'm with you.I don't know about the widths and or the height, but as I stare at it it looks like if you rolled the bottom in you would just have to trim down the sides (post area) which may or may not be easier to cut,but at the end of the day if you are cutting a windshield, what difference does it make what you start with? You might as well start with the truck.I have heard of Sedans being chopped using Hardtop windshields, but never heard of a car windshield in a truck. If it works post pictures.
Thanks man, the passenger car windshield is definitely shorter so I was thinking what you said above about just having to trim the sides. I am going to try and find a 57 car shield to template and go from there. The guy on here called NONAME is a glassguy and he said that if he were to do another 55-58 truck chop then he would start with a 57 chevy passenger windshield. I did send him a PM but haven't heard back yet. I will update this post once I have more info to share either from NONAME or my own findings.
I did a little measuring, the 55 hardtop and 57 truck windshields are about the same height, and they are the same width at the corners (straight across, from one side of the car to the other). If I were chopping a truck, I'd use a truck windshield....because they're less expensive....and you'll need a few of them by the time you're done.
Any chance you could take a measurement of the height of the Car windshield in the middle from the cowl to the roof?
That's what I saw looking at the photo's you posted, the sedan windshield actually looked taller, but it's tough to tell by a picture.
I tried to put a sedan WS in a HT, and I can guarantee you it won't work. If I am remembering correctly, it was 5/8, measuring along the glass, from top to bottom.
Are you serious...after all that shit you come back with a final quote also missing a punctuation at the end?
Car windshields are between 16.8 and 17.5 inches tall at center from what I have found on a 55-57 website. I am going to check the opening on my '57 truck when I get home. I am still very curious. Traditional thinking would be to start with truck and cut down but if I find the car windshield to be shorter then it would make a lot of sense to start there.
hope this might clear stuff up... a link to the thread, and the part #'s of some windshields.... maybe a glass guy can decipher the #'s???http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=678053 <TABLE id=post7561767 class=tborder cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%" align=center border=0><TBODY><TR vAlign=top><TD class=alt2 style="BORDER-TOP: #e5e5e5 0px solid; BORDER-RIGHT: #e5e5e5 1px solid; BORDER-BOTTOM: #e5e5e5 0px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #e5e5e5 1px solid" width=175>squirrel<SCRIPT type=text/javascript> vbmenu_register("postmenu_7561767", true); </SCRIPT> Old School HAMBer Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: Sierra Vista AZ Posts: 24,055 </TD><TD id=td_post_7561767 class=alt1 style="BORDER-RIGHT: #e5e5e5 1px solid"><!-- icon and title --> Re: How I Cut the Curved Glass Down on a Chopped '55 Chevy Pickup <HR style="COLOR: #e5e5e5; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #e5e5e5" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->Quote: <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=alt2 style="BORDER-TOP: 1px inset; BORDER-RIGHT: 1px inset; BORDER-BOTTOM: 1px inset; BORDER-LEFT: 1px inset">Originally Posted by NONAME one quick note 55-59 trucks depending on the chop you would be shocked on how well the D-394,D-396,D-512, D-513 fit in place of the D407 </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> For some reason it doesn't surprise me that the car windshields fit a chopped truck. Great help with this thread. To the impatient prick OP: Looks like this job will give you plenty of time to develop patience. Or bust a few windshields!
Speaking of missing punctuation, try using a comma or two. You forgot to note that I didn't capitalize "Now"
