I just bought a 1957 235 that was pulled from a truck, and going through it to clean and check things out I found the curved oiler tube on top center of the head is pinched and broken. It there a reason it should be pinched closed? Maybe it was damaged when the engine was remove. What is the purpose of this tube?

It may have been pinched closed on purpose after the engine had different lifters installed that enabled the valvetrain to lubricate through the pushrods.

Ok, So if I take out a push rod and it's solid, should I open the tube up again. It is broken off at the highest point. Also, do you know the intake and exhaust gaps.

Oil just oozes out of it. I've had the valve cover off mine while running and as long as there's oil coming out of the rails for the rockers then your good. The tube on mine is the same as yours. Not a lot of pressure up there so you don't have to worry about restricting oil to top end.

  6. that's the oil return so it will oil the rockers a common fix to make the rockers oil, it increases the oil flow to the shaft done by most 235 owners long ago in the 60's

I have seen them pinched shut in the 58 to 62 car motors and looked to have came from the factory like that,I pulled all the valve covers off every 55 and up 235 at a local junkyard looking for that drilled head bolt and noticed all the later 235s having that tube pinched shut. I pinched mine a little to get more oil to the rockers.
