Should run real nice with those gears.
I've got 3.70's in mine, with a really tall tire,so they should behave about the same.I think you're really gonna enjoy it.

On another note, not cam related"I didnt read every post" but experience says if your gonna drop the hammer and have some fun with that 4 sp you better upgrade your rear end cause if it ever finds some traction it will break and youll be embar***ed along side of the road . Not good cause some chevy guy will surelly drive buy and smart off ! Most of use are using Ford 9" rears with Moser axle's 31 spline .

Run it!! make sure the springs will keep the valves from hitting the pistons. If you do not like it (but you will), always go milder. 289's like rpm's, the stock HiPer in 64 had the 271HP@6,000 .can't hurt them.

so are you saying from experience that the 8" wont handle my motor? do i need to go a 9" or can i just upgrade the 8"? Now for a question regarding your Beautiful fairlane. do you have any heat issue running the stock water pump and radiator?

i Hit the jackpot on this one.. so I've been looking for a 4speed console plate(car was a three on the tree)forever now with no luck. so on my travels or should i say late night forum and eBay trolling, i comes across a Steward Warner greenline 970 tach with 990B sending unit on eBay that is ending within minutes and has a reserve so I bid on it! auction ends and the reserve is not met, I contact seller and ask what he need it get for it and to contact me. The seller calls me and blows my mind with the $550 price tag, but this also starts a conversion about vintage parts and how hard some of them are to find. Which brings me to the 4 speed plate I've been searching high and low for. So not to make a long post longer after a nice conversion with my new best buddy 66 year old Canadian street rodder Bill from Northern Ontario, I ended up with both items in the link for 800. :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

The 8" rear will take a moderate beating on the street basically cause there is no traction availible "dirty pavement , big macs smashed and ground in" stuff like that. But as I said if your gonna drop the hammer youll be left stranded , I couldnt keep spiders from breaking , then trying a spool , the axles were the next weak link . the Ford 9" is the way to go , lots of parts availible , and many choices of them ..
As for issues with over heating NONE ! stock pump n radiator work just fine . Thats a good lookin Sports coupe you have there wouldnt want the BowTie gang rippin on ya , build it bullet proof the 1st time and you will be fine .
heres what ours started as.. 221c.i. 2sp automatic .

You might want to try a narrowed 8.8" if you cannot find a 9". I narrowed one for an OT car by using two short axles and cutting one axle tube to fit. I think the final width is about 57 1/4" wide. Just google 'how to narrow 8.8 rear end'.

Plus these are dirt cheap, 31 spline axles, 4 1/2" bp, plenty of gear options available, come in both drums and disc brakes and may even strong enough.

If you use a disc rear and break an axle, the caliper bracket will hopefully keep the wheel under the car :D.

don't the 8.8 have a different bolt pattern?? not 5x4.5 so i would have to change rims?

If you have to narrow it anyway,I would start with a 9".Its easy to keep two pigs on hand, one with 3.50's,the other with 4.11's or 4.88's for fun at the track.Once you've done it a few times it only takes half an hour to make the swap.
Plus, the 9" is more "legit" for a '60's car than a late model rear end.
I agree with what was said earlier about those 8.8's being a good deal, and pretty tough, but if given the choice I would have to go with the 9".
    Just my opinion.

I've already found an 8.8 for 180 bucks and was just trying to decide what gear to run because after measuring the tires they are only 26". So that being said a 3.33 gear would put me at 3012 @ 70mph not bad and 1937 @ 45mph which is pretty much most surface street around here. 9" cost $$ around here four some reason, that being said anybody got one they want to offer up??;)

I have a 3.25 center section, and a buddy with about 100 housings ready to narrow, lots of 31 spline axles, and plenty of center ections with 3.50 gears, most of the stuff is from Ford trucks from the 70's....

If you've already got it Thats a pretty fantastic deal though....Did I miss a few posts? What did it come from originally?

Just talk to the guy today, have not bought it yet.Whats the width of the 9" he hads? would they need both sides shortened? and the axles re-splined or aftermarket ones

I think most of them are real wide and would need the housings shortened, but the 31 spline axles have enough meat to be cut and re splined.

So are you gonna run it at the Meltdown Drags...?
I think our cars would make a really great match race.
Probably the only 13 second match race in history, but it looks like they would be really close....lol

Resplined axles are not for strip use...A good hook or a little wheel hop and they will break...My 289 is close to the OP's build and I broke 31's several times before I could dial the bars in..***** to drive home with one wheel drive, good thing I had a Detroit locker...

I think it will help that my car is only 2700 lbs,and only has about 330hp/300ish ft/lb.....I hope.

Ok so the shift plate and tach showed up yesterday and the radio plate should be here after X-mas but need to find the radio now. Put one of the greenline gauges in the gauge pod and it fits better then the new ones. know i just have to figure out what Ohms the gauges work on.

I have a pretty healthy 347 in my Mustang. Maybe 400 hp (+ or- ) I have the stock 8 inch, with a 4.11 posi. It takes a beating every time I drive it. Granted, I have not had it at the track or been able to do a hard launch yet.

Skinny stocker tires give the ability to spin (roast) at any "intown" speed. Which is pretty damn fun...

Ya I've decided to stay with the 8". going to change out the center section with some currie stuff 8" ALUMIN8® BILLET ALUMINUM BIG BEARING PINION SUPPORT (the will be Studded) a the newer style housing and 3.33 gears possibly a set of currie axles down the line. Not like the Indy profiles are going to have a chance anyways, traction will be my issue.
