I have a 1953 gmc 1/2 ton pickup and would like to change the rear end. or ring and pinion to a 355/1. it has the closed drive shaft. can this be done without changing transmission?

Thanks for the help! Looks like Patricks might be the place for me. The 53 GMC that I have was a present I gave my wife for her birthday. It runs great and looks good, but its geared to low to get out on open roads with other drivers. I was hopping to install a complete rear end and open drive shaft. But I'm not sure I can without changing the transmission and or motor. I would like more info on this if possible. Thanks
