    I think it'll show just fine. Why not be a daily driver? That's what they're made for. I just picked up mine last night. Got some work to do, but it's a solid start. For $800 bucks I couldn't pass it up. Came with an extra hood with all the molding and trim and both horns attached. This place (in Arkansas) is a gold mine.

    Great tech on the F1 style trucks. I am picking up a 51 F7 Big Job with a 50 frame that has a firebird front clip, HiPo 289 with C4 and 10 bolt rear out of same firebird.

    It's a work truck and covers lots of miles and makes me smile.

    my 49 F3 project before paint removal and rust fixing. subframed with 85 crown vic, using all the running gear, wiring, brakes, tilt column. planning on a 4-5" chop, 4-5" section, a "faked" channeled cab, and a pancaked hood 4-5" to match. thinking about trying to keep the windshield stock and lay it back, deleting the "forehead" these cabs have. then laying it out with hydros or air. long and low!

    49 F1. Flathead w/ 3 speed which are staying in it.

    So far..rebuilt the carb..got it to fire off a few seconds at a time...k good enough for now.

    About to start on a 12v conversion, brakes, cooling system overhaul, get it one color in primer and drive it for a bit and just restore as I go.

    We started on this 51. We've had it for almost 8 years now. All original and stock. Has 239 V8. Doing a refresher build with a few small mods.

    Got her to go around the block a few days ago with a two gallon gas can inside the cab as the fuel tank.

    So, were there any 48-50 trucks with a spare tire mounted on the passenger's side of the bed? Mine has a nearly perfect dent in the right rear fender, but no mounting on the bed for a spare? The dent is too perfect to be an accident. I can find no pictures of a 48-50 with a spare tire mounted, or a fender like this?

    Side mounted spare didn't become an option until 1953. However, it's not that hard to pound the fender to accept a side mount spare or to carefully cut and patch the fender for the side mount spare.

    I recently bought a pair of fenders on which the right side had the space for side mount spare beat into the fender.

  26. I have read through this thread in it's entirety, I have googled these trucks and asked friends who own multiples, and no one can answer this question:

    What are the differences between the 48-50 F-1's?

    I've been told absolutely nothing, which leads me to the next question:

    Did they have a "deluxe cab" package(similar to the five star for 51-52) in 48-50?

    Reason I ask, last night I was looking over two 49's and a 48. The 48 is the truck I have my sights on because it's so solid and has an awesome paint job on it. But the other complete truck is a 49 and it has a decorative hood ornament on it, and arm rests. As well as an under hood light that looks factory. All of these details look to be factory, as this truck is very original and a bit crusty(it has never been restored is what I am getting it). What gives?

    With that said, I have a 1959 Chevy Apache 3100 with a 327 and a 4speed that needs a new home. I will trade it for a solid and complete F-1.

    While there are no major differences between the 48-50 model years, there are a few subtle changes that are barely noticeable. In 1948, the stock grille was painted Tucson Tan with a thin red line at the top of each grille bar. Starting in 49, the grille could be ordered with stainless steel trim covers.

    There were no deluxe packages offered in 48-50. The deluxe package, or "Extra" as it was touted by Ford, was offered starting in 1951. Arm rests and the engine compartment light were available as options through the dealer. I have a set of NOS arm rests and the engine compartment light. The Ford trucks never offered a hood ornament. However, plenty could be adapted from various cars, including Ford cars. The "Extra" package could be added to any 48-50 truck by simply adding or replacing the existing parts with Extra option parts from a 51-52 truck.

    Also, only way to tell a 49 from a 50 is by the production sequence number in the data tag. Usually, anything above 250000 is a 1950.

    Ilya, I had a '48 F-4 with the beige grill with the stainless grill covers. The truck I am sure was stock with the stainless because the oblong holes were stamped in the grill, not drilled.

    Also, there's a difference in the vent window bar, it's either the '48s had painted and the later had stainless, or visa versa, it's such a minute difference it's not really important. There are a couple of other differences but again, so minute no one really knows except the real Ford "experts".

    As we've discussed on the FTE board, Ford didn't seem to follow any real set of rules when it came to these trucks. They seemed to use whatever parts from whatever supplier was handy. They just wanted to get the trucks out the door and sale as many as possible.

    I understand what you're saying. And I've been around vintage/antique items long enough to question the originality of certain features. But for some reason these just look "stock" to me at the time I noticed them. I have seen a few other trucks on craigslist for sale with this same hood ornament. As you said about the dealer having these parts as "accessories"... then chances are that is what I am finding.

    I will get some pictures of the truck this weekend. Hopefully when I go to pick up the '48 F-1 that I've worked for the past 3 weeks to pry from the owners hands(he's a tough negotiator). I wanted the '49 in question as well, but the '48 just has what I'm looking for.

    Good looking 52. However, it seems to sport a hood and latch panel from a 51. The latch panel is from a 6 cylinder. What's the fourth character in the VIN?
