I am on my 3rd Wings tach. First one worked perfectly until case cracked so I bought 2 more and both of them are very erratic. They are wired exactly as the original. What is the problem? Thanks in advance.
Poor quality? I don't know where the winged instruments are made by my guess is that they are made off shore. You may check all your connections and make sure they you don't have a barrel splice getting ready to spit a wire some where.
I have had a problem with the tach and the speedo. Tach will even do circles sometimes, speedo jumps all over. I know there was a thread on dolphin gauges how bad they were but mine work great alot better than these flyin wing things.
Stewart Warner is no more.....they are made in Mexico and are merely impersonating the old series in appearance only....... If you make the mistake of calling their"tech" number you will pay about 10dollars for an international call, and a "tech" guy will tell you thet there is nothing he can do but collect his salary for taking the customers abuse we give him for their ****ty quality control. send em back to the vendor you got em from and eventually the returns will outnumber the new orders....
Anytime I have something weird going on electrically, I check the ground connections first. Then, I'd call the company and ask for their tech support. Of course, it's always your fault, but just maybe. Choprods beat me to the tech stuff in his post, but SW does have US contacts-and if that doesn't work, how about Canadian,eh? I've got the whole 6 gauge set and they performed very well........ until last fall, on the way back from a cruise the odometer hit 1000 miles and never rolled to 1001. I've driven about 500 miles this year ( obviously I'm guessing ) and it still reads 1000. The tenths roll but when they get to 9 it doesn't click the next mile. Everything else works good. Mine said ***embled in Mexico, no mention of where they were made. So I guess when I'm ready to sell it it'll be real low mileage, .
I've had the same problem with both the tach and the electric speedo. However I have had some luck fixing them. First make sure the hot wire for both is on the 'Battery' terminal of the ignition switch, second try a noise filter in line on the hot wire. I have a generator and points ignition on a flatty and these things worked for me. If you have electronic ignition I hear the problem is worse but MSD makes an inline noise filter and capacitor specifically to cure these problems. Good luck and don't quit.
The new SW gauges are not the quality of the ones we guys grew up loving. Yes, they are made in Mexico and the calls are taken by some guys in Texas. My Son bought the complete set of Wings for his rpu and right out of the box the first speedometer would not calibrate. It would peg at 160 mph as soon as you started driving. Summit swapped it out and the second one does work. Also, two of the gauges had needles that were laying loose inside the face when we opened the box. We called Texas and they graciously replaced them at no charge, but still that should not have happened. Nope, those old SW gauges that were indestructible are a thing of the past. Don
My SW tach was lazy, responded slowly, and was off 400 rpm at 5000. Threw it in the junk parts bin. Ive had good lock with Autometer stuff.
I had problems with a SW tach hanging up and reading high. Spoke to a rep at a show and he said the oil or grease that lubes the inner workings may have thickened and he suggested I put in an oven at low temp to loosen it up. Never did cause it was to hard to remove it from dash, but it did sound like a good idea.
To sum it up in one word "JUNK" I have one it also goes around in circles, it came with the 34 so I can't send it back with a nasty letter.
Since beatin a dead horse is fruitless I would recommend anyone looking for guages just shop the several other quality vendors still making guages that are good instead of hanging our hopes on a brand name that cant deliver...... VDO/ Cl***ic Instruments etc etc etc....are a good place to start looking. Read the many user reviews on such guages before dropping that sort of cash.
Made in mexico junk. After several tries and about $100 in long distance phone charges finally got one that kind of worked. It is stable, but out about 400 rpm. Lasted about a year until the needle fell off. After several more calls to mexico, i finally talked yaunita into sending me a replacement needle.this was difficult because the only spanish i know is what i learned from watching the cisco kid on my grandmothers 10 inch r c a in the 50's. From what i learned a company called maxima technologies in pa makes the stewart warner guages under some sort of a licince(???). As i said they are ***embled in mexico. The words 'customer service' are unknowen to anybody at maxima. Just my $.02 worth.
****ie ... if the SW tack does not function properly ... Just bring the 3W to my house and I will drive it for you I will keep it safe and have a nice garage for it to live in
I am confused why you are talking to Mexico? SW, maybe indeed lower quality stuff, lists an 800 number and a 717 number-which is eastern Pennsylvania. Not everything made in Mexico is junk-Chevy trucks are made there and their qulaity is pretty good, just like not everything made in the USA is top quality. Some you win, some you lose. And, of course, there's the shipping of the gauge, handling at the warehouse and the potential abuse by the installer. Not sure how I'd spend your 2 cents.
I went through 6 SW Wings tachs and never did get one that worked. Finally I switched to Autometer tach and it works perfectly with the same wiring I was trying to use on the SW tachs. SW must only make junk now and that is sad.
