So I have a 3 year old son, a 5 year old stepson, and a little girl due in march... So Im looking at moor doors.
I ran across this one but I dont know to much about a '50 Merc...

What is your opinions on it? and what would you think that its worth?

I like it and my wife does to...

Its just like I said... When it comes to 50 mercs/fords I know very little...

Its on an auction website and ends in a few days (not ebay).

  4. If you like it and your wife likes it and you can afford it then buy it .

  5. Looks like a solid honest car , from the pics anyway.

'49-'51 more-door Mercs are way cool! With the suicide rear doors, you'll need some safety latches to keep kids from being yanked out of car if they open door while underway (happened to one of my sisters in 1949 when she was 4 yrs old).

If you need a mordor, you couldn't have picked a more desirable one. What's the asking price??

I think it's a real neat car. I've got a stock '51 four door in similar condition.

I wouldn't buy it sight unseen, but if it's a good car, you'll be happy with it.

you would be hard pressed to find a more desirable 4 door.

  15. The vents under the dash, has it got a/c?? What's in it for a motor? - can't tell from the pics. The temp gauge shouldn't be pegged way over 'there' even if it is a flatty :)

If it's as good as it looks, it's got to be worth 8-10k...right? Is it ready to drive home? Or is it a project? I'd seriously find out what is up with the temp guage. You need to go look it over.

If it's as nice as it looks from the outside, ready to drive, I'd say anything under 10K is a good price. That's just going off of the pics though, and assuming it's totally roadworthy. This is one of a few 4 door cars that you could pay decent money for and not take it in the shorts if you ever decided to sell it. Would look nice with some '49 parking lights.

Looks like a good choice to me, you cant go wrong with a merc, looks like it has a/c also... the gauges may not be working due to them being 6 volt originally and not being switched over to 12 volt, if the owner updated the wiring. I havent put voltage drops on mine yet... I would say anywhere in the 10-12 grand range would be a fair price, if it is mechanically sound. If u like it, buy it!! Good luck!

I would go look at it. 2 doors are scarce and you have a family. I had a Mercury 4 door down the street from me when I was a child. Rode to many dirt track races in the back with my best friend. That era of Mercurys have a decent size trunks. Only thing you must do is child proof the suicide door locks. StrayKat Mickey has a 51 4 door he converted into a 2 door. He also has a 4 door 60 Impala 4 door. Steve W. from the Kontinentals in Austin has a very nice Mercury 4 door. I owned a 40 Mercury 4 door years ago. Good Luck.

  20. Personally if I were starting over again I would find a nice 2 door station wagon. This coming from a guy that has owned the same 50 Merc since High School and raised raised a family in it. I had a 57 Ford Del Rio Ranch Wagon and it worked much better for a family car than the Merc. You can still buy a nice one and much cheeper than a Merc. Replacement parts are also readily available.
    Something to think about.

Its a good looking car, i'd definately check it out in person and drive it before making a bid, take a magnet and a thin coth with you and go all over it for excessive filler.

As stated before, you can't go wrong with a 49-51 Mercury. Very big following of these cars, including the 4 doors. I spent the last 3 years, searching for a Mercury, found a 51 coupe and am very happy with it. IN MY OPINION, the car you pictured, should bring at least 10-12K or more depending the details. 23. I would jump on it like a duck on a June bug!,,you can never go wrong with a 49-51 Mercury regardless of how many doors it has. HRP

I think he has something there. Long roofs are all the rage right now. Don't forget with 3 kids, if you travel a bit in it you will need some extra storage space to say the least. Although if the Merc goes for a couple of Grand you can not go wrong.

As everyone else say 4dr Mercs are one of the coolest 4drs. But wagons are hard to beat also imo. Good luck!

I am also a big fan of 2 door wagons, but I'm not aware of them being "much cheeper than a Merc". Would like to see some examples of cheap 50's 2 door wagons in nice shape.

Yes. You have permission to spend your money. Some 4 doors can be made to look cool.

SO....whats the news...did you get it?

  29. Dam cool car even if it has the back doors. shave the rear door handles so they only open from the inside and set the rear down low. The family will love it.

I like a merc. two or 4 door. I'd only but it as high as maybe $6500 around these pasts and that'd be pushing it--but then i see people selling crap I woudn't be caught dead in for way more.

I'm in a de facto 2 door wagon (factory window delivery) with 4 kids. 3 was doable, but tight--I'm gonna have to rework the interior or look bigger now. FYI there's a nice 48 suburban project car in Salisbury right now. If I had anyone intersted in mine I'd be looking at it. with all the crap kids need/require these days the more space you can swing the better.
